Default "newbie" type question- thinking about getting a G4 for my 001

Hi,
I'm thinking about getting a G4 b/c my G3 recently broke. But trying to find the best deal for my situation has been confusing. I have a Factory 001 w/ PT LE 5.1 & have been using Reason 1.0 (recently ordered 2.5) w/ OS 9.1. Thus, all my plug-ins, programs, files, etc. have to use OS 9, right?

What is the best G4 that I can use w/ OS 9? I read that the "Dual 867 Mhz PowerPC G4" is the best I can get but a seller on ebay said it would be hard to install OS 9 on it.

I thought that the g5, & any Dual Power G4 1 Ghz won't be able
to run OS 9 but then these links confused me; can they run OS9?

Thank you very much for reading. I really appreciate it.

Pro Tools will not run on a mac running OS 9 in classic mode. Which is what is described in the links you provided. Classic mode is how you can run some OS9 apps in OSX, it does not support every OS9 program and PT is one of the apps that does not work. from what I know the G4 firewire 800 model was the first to drop OS9 support which was a single 1ghz, dual 1.25 and dual 1.42 machine, this model was released in 2003 so I guess any model pre 2003 will be fine!I think dual 1ghz is the highest spec you can get that will run OS9 tho I might be wrong.
This site has loads of good info

http://www.macupgrades.co.uk/store/m...uicksilver2001

Also you could consider a processor upgrade

http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/accelerators/

These guys do major G4/G3 upgrades!

Alternatively bite the bullet and get rid of the 001 and upgrade everything!

Hope this helps.

That was very helpful, ElectricGhost:) Thanks again.

So this computer (Apple MAC G4 Dual 1.0Ghz) should be able to run OS9?:

& this one shouldn't(Apple Power Mac G4 1.25GHz Dual)?

You know that OS9 will not use both processors with Pro Tools 5 right?

If you're gonna get a G4 (which is as high as you can go with an 001) they did make a dual 1.25ghz that will boot OS9. That machine or any other dual 1G+ will run LE 6.4 pretty well. If however you plan on staying with 9 you'd be better off to get the fastest single CPU you can find.

Either way you want one with L3 cache. The cacheless models are dogs for FPU intensive tasks like audio processing.

Yeah the G4 Dual optical from late 2002 was the last dual processor machine that could run OS9 and the largest processor size was 1.25ghz.
Here is the info from the site I gave you the link for

The G4 Dual Optical, and its successor the G4 FireWire 800, can be easily distinguished from other G4 towers by their mirrored front panel. They are the only PowerMac G4s capable of mounting two CD drives, all preceding PowerMac G4s could take an optional ZIP drive below their single CD bay.

The easiest way to distinguish the two dual optical models is the connectivity. This page deals with machines which have standard FireWire (FireWire 400). If your PowerMac has FireWire 800 please refer to the page for the PowerMac G4 FireWire 800. If you are unsure of your connectivity, you should use the Apple System Profiler utility.

Processor speed can also be helpful, these machines came in a dual 867MHz, dual 1GHz or dual 1.25GHz configuration. However there was a dual 1GHz Quicksilver 2002, and there was a dual 1.25GHz PowerMac G4 FireWire 800.

But I would tend to listen to M.Brane...
If PT5 can't use both processors that will be pretty useless, so again the other alternative is to upgrade to OSX(Panther) and run PT6.4...the last build that will support the 001. My friend still has a G4 867mhz with a 001 and we finally upgraded it all to the last specs and it still runs really well considering it is really under powered. Although since using newer and newer versions of PT I really hate going back, even to 6.4 as there is so much stuff missing.
Hope this helps!

Thanks guys. Your replies have been very helpful.

Will I be able to use my old plug-ins, PT 5.1 files, etc. with PT 6.4? & I can only use 6.4 w/ OS X, right?

Oh man, I don't even know much about cache, M.Brane. Ack...

So I guess something like this would be my best option? Apple Power Mac G4/1.25GHz Single Processor Mirrored Drive Doors 512:
http://www.macofalltrades.com/Apple_...g4125spmd2.htm

Looks like I have been missing out on lots of technological advances but have been satisfied w/ what I could accomplish with 5.1. Also, I still want to be able to use my old plug-ins & files. Ah, stubborness... Thanks again. It's very much appreciated.

You will be able to open PT5 sessions in PT6.4 but as for the plugins...you will have to upgrade them all. And yes 6.4 will only work with OSX(Panther) I believe. I am not sure about that computer?I would email them and ask if it will run OS9 native, again classic will be no good!
Yeah I do understand there are certain reasons why people don't upgrade from OS9.
Good luck!

Why would you want to use PT6.4 if you were going to run it on a computer of that spec? You could just run PT8 and be totally up to date?

I'm thinking that if I could use 6.4 LE w/ my mini mac (is that possible?), then I would still be able to use/edit my 5.1 sessions. Also, it would be considerably cheaper.

Would I be able to use 5.1 files w/ 8.0? But I am definitely intrigued by the idea of being up to date. Maybe I can get a mac mini 2.
