Default Getting grid to follow inconsistent click

I have a very old session that has been digitized. The click sounds like an analog recording of something trying to keep the time constant. Lo and behold it wavers so I'm trying to get the grid to adjust accordingly to the inconsistent click.

There must be an easy way to do this.

Any help is appreciated!

Depends on what your definition of easy is!

I would start by manually marking beat 1 of each section of the song (verse, chorus, bridge, etc.) and then use Beat Detective to identify and set the tempo of the individual clicks in each section.

If you have another DAW (namely Cubase/Nuendo) it does this especially well (map tempo map) and then you create a midi file in that DAW, export, and import the tempo map from the MIDI export into Pro Tools.

(This is honestly how we've done it for free-form tracks. It can take just a few minutes.)

Yep, the tools in both Cubase and Logic are much better at this common task. In Pro Tools I usually just map out the big chunks (every 16 or 32 bars) manually and then let Beat Detective do the individual beats, which is reasonably fast, but if it's a longer song, or a bit more complex, I'll port it out to one of the other DAWs and do it - usually saves time.

I have Logic but find it incredibly confusing to use. I’ve exported for this but in my case the file always needs a little tweaking.

tab to transient and identify beat..
should take a few minutes but reasonably handy..
you can just identify beat every 4 or 8 bars and it tends to be close enough..

Go to youtube and search for something like "create a tempo map in pro tools"(without the quotes). Another alternative if you have certain versions of Melodyne, in the stand-alone version(NOT as a plugin), you can import an audio file>let Melodyne analyze and show tempo>force the tempo to a flat line. If Celemony offers a free trial of Melodyne Editor, it might be worth a try(but not if you are dealing with multi-tracks)
