look for older TL audio stuff,
It's really great discrete component studio gear, not quite neve or avalon but really reasonable used, check ebay and recycler.
the good stuff is in dark blue or grey chassis, I have a blue (indigo series) chanel strip 2051, it's really nice, low noise, warm optp comp and eq, mic pre w/48v, I paid $640 new old stock from a guy on ebay.

I know they have red series too, fet transistors replace the tubes in the indigo series, dont know how those sound, Also a white (ivory) series that is not as good .

If you are looking for JUST a mike pre- NTI and benchmark are excelent,

best of luck

If you wait a month or so you could have a really nice mic pre.

The 737 doesn't have digital outs. That forces you to go in the digi 1/4 inputs and through their "not so great" A/D converters. I'll bet the Avalon is great but your not getting it's full potential that way.
I opted for a mic pre with digital outs and great A/D. I found it in the Aphex 1100 dual mic pre. Not too much more than the Avalon.

I have an aphex 107, works pretty well and is tube. Lower end of the apex line, but Ive seen that at closeout prices, and considerd buying one thogh i didnt need it! Its nice in that it has all the good features, albeit its no avalon or similar, but for my little room it works well.
