Default MIDI inaudible from Pro Tools

I have vague memories of being able to play MIDI fine back in version 6.4, but back then I didn't actually need it. Since upgrading to 7.0 I haven't been able to monitor MIDI from Pro Tools, at all. I write a note with the pencil tool and the volume meter goes up and down, but there's no sound through either the Digi 002 rack or the speakers.

My PC plays MIDI files fine with Media Player, but only via the Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth. The MIDI output options in pro tools MIDI tracks are: MPU-401 and three emulators - Digidesign Digi 002 ports 1 and 2, and Microsoft MIDI Mapper. If I go to the Windows XP Sound and Audio Device properties dialog and change the MIDI Music Playback device from to MPU-401, I can no longer hear MIDI file playback at all. Even though as I understand it, the MPU-401 is the basic MIDI player all computers come with.

Why can't I select the Wavetable SW Synth as a MIDI Track output from Pro Tools? Am I missing something else? I'm fairly new to PT, but I'm not doing anything completely stupid like muting the tracks. I can monitor and record audio tracks fine, and if I write a few MIDI notes on a track and then export it as a MIDI file, I can play that fine as well - I just can't hear it from within Pro Tools. It's possible I need to configure something - any help with that would be very welcome. I've never had any trouble with 7.0 before this.

Many thanks for any help.

Default Re: MIDI inaudible from Pro Tools

Hi BCU 11,

I've the same problem with midi in PT 7.1 although it worked in PT 6.9 & PT 7 : i can't hear what i wrote on the edit screen (or just 2 seconds???); also i can't write every midi notes with using Reason.
I've some probems with midi synchro when i'm trying to trigg a MPC 2000...
Also i can't hear the metronome click (or just 2 or 10 seconds???).
Have your try your metronome click?

It seems to be a probem with midi synchro in 002 Rack harware.
If you have keys of our problems; send me a message.

Ive had protools running before through many versions on desktops and most recently on a viao laptop with the same exact version 6.7 I want to use with this new higher spec laptop.

To confirm a few things you did mean this 'dual core hotfix' right?

This is a brand new out the box laptop from dell, reformatted with a clean install of XP SP2, nothings been messed with.

Ive been into the bios and turned off speedstep and even tried turning of the dual core, but it still produces the same, system resource errors, either CPU maxed or HD Buffer, which makes me think its not the dual core thing.

Ive done the Processor scheduling thing from the FAQ.

Ive updated the pace driver.

Ive tried to update the CS but there are non for 6.7

I really need help with this asap, as am leaving the country to do some recording in LA in a few days!! anyone???

Default Re: MIDI inaudible from Pro Tools

The Midi click function doesn't produce a sound any more either. I always used the click plugin for timing before so I literally hadn't noticed until now. My install of PT is on a reformatted Hard Disk with a new sound card, so I know there's nothing going wrong with the other hardware.

Surely if the Digirack has a sync problem, it must be because of a change in the way 7 and 7.1handle midi - i.e. the software not the hardware. Like you, before 7.0 it worked fine.

Has there been a thread or inquiries into this problem before on the boards? I'll be very grateful for any help.

Default Re: Problems with PTLE? Post your configuration here..

I've had the Digi 002 for months now, and have been quite frustrated with error 6088 and 6085 the entire time. I bought a third hard drive(SATA) thinking it would allow me to record more than one track for more than 30 seconds... but unless I'm lucky, I can't even get anything more than 6 seconds down anymore. I replaced the Firewire card, tried disabling everything else possible, and walked through a dozen other "solutions" found on these forums. Can someone please help me out? Here's a previous post I did , possibly in better detail, if that helps. It left me hangin', thinking I'd need to replace my motherboard. I'll do it... I just wanna be sure of the problem before I dig for more coins.

Here's my computer overview currently:

Default Media Center Query

This is a new computer that has one big problem: it's running XP Media Center. I didn't realize this was an issue until after I brought it home. I was told that there were a few people out there running Media Center without too much difficulty so perhaps it's something else here i can't see. I installed ProTools once and had problems right out of the gate: I had tons of the classic H/W buffer size is too small/large business, my computer showed my IDE devices as unrecognizeable, and it suffered startup failure almost each time it was booted up.
The worst part is i can't just install XP Pro, I need to buy the software in its entirety (299.99) and completely reinitialize the computer and reinstall all the devices with new drivers. Let me know if there is no way around it and I think I'll just return it, eat the 15% restocking fee and have one built for me.
Thanks to anyone who is willing to add their two cents.

Default Re: Problems with PTLE? Post your configuration he

I am having some serious problems trying to get my freaking RTAS plugins to work properly. I have done absolutely everything I can think of! Please help if you can! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

First, here's a list of errors/problems that i keep experiencing:

-Many error messages when I use most RTAS plug-ins, mainly cosmonaut voice for some reason. I mainly get this one: "Problem detected with audio clock. Check that your clock source and sample rate are correct" even though the only device I am running is the 002R. What the heck?

This is usually coupled with a "-9128 You are running out of CPU power. Remove some RTAS plug-ins or increase the CPU usage limit in the playback engine"

When I do so, I get the "-9128 Audio processing is conflicting with other CPU tasks. If this occurs often, reducing the “H/W Buffer Size” in the Playback Engine Dialog may help prevent the problem"

Then sometimes, I get this "-9094 The operating system held off interrupts for too long. If this occurs often, try increasing the hardware buffer size in the playback engine dialogue." I think this happened the other day when i was recording 3 tracks at once, it stopped about 3:24 into the recording. I also get this error when using plugins.

I also get "pops" through my monitors at times when using plug-ins or even when minimizing/maximizing windows.

I'm not even running multiple plugins, just one will cause these errors to pop up! Why?!?!?! I'm really scared that I won't be able to use one plugin, or be able to record multiple tracks!

-Here is my system setup/specs:

Running ProTools LE 7.1 through a 002R on a PC with windows XP (SP2)
Processor: Pentium 4 with intel 865G chipset,
3.2 GHz processor, 800FSB, 1 meg RAM L2 cache
1 80GB system hard drive, 1 250 GB seagate barracuda drive dedicated to Digidesign files. Both are SATA (I believe)

I am deathly tired from trying to get this to work. Should I just give up and buy a mac? PLEASE HELP!

Default Re: MIDI inaudible from Pro Tools

Hi BCU11,

I've found a thread solving our midi issues ; we can thank Phil O'Keefe...

Okay folks, I solved my MIDI issues, but it took some work, and the solution isn't really a simple / easy one.

The problem was indeed the video card software and the AMD CPU driver. Pro Tools will function fine with audio, but will stutter and lock with any session with MIDI data in it... and that includes the click plug in.

Rolling back the AMD driver to the stock MS driver did no0t work for me.

Uninstalling the ATI Catalyst software did NOT work for me.

Doing a reinstall of Windows XP Pro over the old install (to the same folder C:\Windows) did not work.

The only way I was able to get everything working properly was to back up all my data, wipe (reformat) the C drive and re-install Win XP to a "clean" drive.

After doing that, DO NOT re-install the AMD CPU driver! Just use the stock MS CPU driver that installs with Windows.

Also, you can use the ATI video driver, but do NOT install any additional software - Catalyst, etc.

It's a pain, and it takes a lot of time to re-install XP and then all your programs and plug-ins, but it will clear up the problem.

I normally make a Norton Ghost image of my drive once I have my installation dialed in and functioning perfectly, but since it was a new system build and I was still testing everything, I had not done so yet. It wouldn't have worked anyway, since I had installed all the ATI software just after getting Windows installed, but now that it's all set, you can be certain I have now done so.

Hope that helps.

Oh, and FWIW, my system specs:

Athlon 64 4200 X2
Asus A8N-SLi Premium
Sapphire ATI Radeon X550 dual head video card
2 GB Patriot RAM
Promise TX133 IDE PCI card
Digi 002 / PT 7.0 cs4

I've just seen your pc configuration and I don't know if my reply can solve your probem. For me, I think the problem was AMD CPU driver but for you it can be your video card.
Hope you find an solution.
