Default confused about ilok

i read some threads and i see you need the damned thing to run ptm-p.. however.....

do i need to install the client from ilok.com?
do i need to worry about ilok.com for pt use?
what do ilok plugins do for pt?
do i only need it when pt asks for it? it also yelled at me when i tried to bounce to mp3.. im just saving as a wav then converting with Switch, whats ilok have to do with my bounces?
overall.. why should i learn to love it and not feel confused by its function?

The mp3-option is a payed option in PT and you have to save the license for it on your iLok-key. You can bounce it to wav and do the mp3-reduction outside PT for free, but if you do it a lot (like me) it´s a clever investment.

The iLok is for saving licenses, not for the plugin as such.

I told it to save to myHD and it prompted me to a site to buy it, but i accidentally clicked out, when I tried again it told me the demo expired. If i wanted to buy this how do i go about bringing it back up to buy and add to my ilok?

iLok Client: Yes.
- The client scans the iLok when you connect to the website to let you manage your licenses.

iLok.com for PT use: Not really. You should have the account set up at iLok.com, but the site does not need to be open to use ProTools.

What it does: The iLok is a dongle that holds all the account information for the plug-ins you've purchased for Pro Tools that require an iLok asset. There are Many out there. If you have Plug-ins loaded that requires the license, and the iLok is not plugged in, the plug-in will not load. Pro Tools will open without the plug-in.

In short:

The iLok
is needed when you're using Pro Tools if you have licenses loaded on it.

The website is simply a management tool for the assets on the iLok. From the website there are many options you can investigate yourself. Poke around all you like. For the love of all the fun toys, do not delete anything just to see what it does. It deletes...for ever.

Bounding to MP3 is a purchasable license. It can be found in the Music Production Toolkit 1 or 2.
