2020.3 on Windows 10 - video corruption and cannot uninstall
I've reported this as a bug, but thought I would post in case anyone else has a similar experience.
I updated from 2019.12 to 2020.3 (did not uninstall 2019.12). After I did the install, Windows 10 would not let me "uninstall" Pro Tools. It was grayed out. Also, every time I would bounce a track, the time remaining would get a black bar over it (on black text). When the bounce was done, all of the video would get corrupted, with weird colors and artifacts. I had to save and exit by hot keys. When I exited, it sometimes refreshed the video and might be Ok if I opened the session again. Sometimes not. one time I got an exception error and it crashed. So then back to the uninstall. Since that would not work, I tried installing 2019.12 over 2020.3. it was almost complete, but then aborted at the very end telling me MMErefresh was not available to be installed (huh?). So I rebooted, then wiped out the Program Files/Avid folder and a few things like preferences (but not my IO files) -- essentially a manual uninstall of what it left behind. Then I installed 2019.12 again and now it is up and running just fine (3 hours later...). no video issues. so I am confident that the video issue with 2020.3 is something new. So glad I'm paying for the privilege of this experience...

Re: 2020.3 on Windows 10 - video corruption and cannot uninstall
On Windows it's always best to first uninstall Pro Tools completely - checking all three options - Reboot, run CCleaner's Registry Cleaner until there are no more issues - then install the new version of Pro Tools, Reboot and carry on.
And with 2020.3, the video engine is a separate install. Probably best to uninstall and start over. But if it was me, I'd restore the image I had made with 2019.12 installed and start there.

Re: 2020.3 on Windows 10 - video corruption and cannot uninstall
You’re not alone with the video issue....I’ve spent HOURS and HOURS trying everything I know how to do, and everything suggested in the e-mail I got from AVID support, and all I get when trying to enable the video engine is, it getting stuck in a loop trying to initialize. Shoot, I even re-downloaded & extracted the installers in the hope that it was something as simple as a corrupt installer.
This suggestion: a. Remove this folder (even if there is nothing inside): C:\Program Files\Avid\AVX2_Plug-ins\AMA b. Remove all the plug-ins inside of: C:\Program Files\Avid\AVX2_Plug-ins Resulted in Pro Tools hanging on the opening splash screen and not launching AT ALL. So I uninstalled-reinstalled EVERYTHING, and after days of futzing around with it, I’m back where I started. (By the way, there’s numerous reports of omf imports being broken in 2020.3) If I need to bring video into it (which I do, frequently) my best option is my 10.3.10 co-install, which Avid says “isn’t Win 10 compatible,” but at least IT works! I had let my support plan lapse at PT HD 12.4, and frankly feel like I’ve been had, paying over $1k to get these updates that have crippled my workflow. But I don’t foresee making that mistake again. As the old saying goes, fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on ME. 12.4 is looking pretty good again. Last edited by sw rec; 04-07-2020 at 09:50 PM. |

Re: 2020.3 on Windows 10 - video corruption and cannot uninstall
I'm not even trying to use the video engine. Just recording audio. Standard Pro Tools. And in fact I uninstalled it when troubleshooting hoping it might make a difference, but it did not. unchecked the "enable GPU" in preferences as well. Only thing that worked was going back to 2019.12. At least that one is about 95% stable for me. I'm kind of sorry I bought 2 more years of support. Probably should have just stopped at 2019.12 -- I mean does it EVER get any better than 95% stable? not that I've ever seen.

Re: 2020.3 on Windows 10 - video corruption and cannot uninstall
Pretty ugly issue even for Avid. Video Engine inoperable on my system - stalls
at Waiting for video engine to launch so no video engine. And the uninstaller is broken - greyed out. Tried all the usual fixes reinstalls, prefs etc. No go. I hope somebody comes up with something soon. I'll keep trying. |

Alternatively, this from Pro Tools PC: 1. First backup important prefs and Plug-in folder with Trasher 2. After uninstalling, go to C:\Program Files and delete the Avid folder. 3. Go to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Avid and delete the Pro Tools folder, BUT KEEP the Audio folder. 4. Go to C:\users\your name\AppData\Roaming\Avid and delete the Pro Tools folder. DO NOT DELETE the Pro Tools 10 folder. 5. Go to C:\users\your name\AppData\Local and delete the Avid folder

Re: 2020.3 on Windows 10 - video corruption and cannot uninstall
TD99, I’d like to see your system details (didn’t see them in your profile). Because some Windows users are actually reporting success. I’m wondering if we compared notes, if we might find a common denominator for why this isn’t working. Thanks!
