Default Surround Gurus Sound Off

Hey guys, it's been a long time since I've lurked around here. I'm still in the biz, but busy with gigs and life.

I'm about to embark on the surround adventure, which as mostly an editor I never thought I'd need to do, but alas... I must finally buy into it.

I know this topic of "how to do surround" has been discussed here ad nausea , but I'm not looking for "how to". I did a DUC search and got some good info, but I'm looking for more basic level techniques on set up, plug-ins, monitor placement, panning the "less is more way", etc.

Please direct me to the best sites, mags, books, gurus, or whatever else you like to get me on the right path to surround mixing excellence. Then I'll go bug them for help and not annoy the DUC with "how do I mix in surround" stuff.

My lurking (along with thread butting-in) should pick up from here on again.

So, see you guys around...

Oh, and BTW, if you're a Blue Sky user (or wish you were), they're selling the 1st gen 6.5 SAT's for $325.00 direct. That should make it easier to move from the 2.1 system to 5.1, as they list for $650.

hi mark,

nice to see you de-cloak.

the links in the room cal thread are a good place to start. then pull down even more Dolby docs. Those amd the Tomlinson Holman book should be all you need for speaker placement and understanding a bit more than the basics.

take a look at some of the Gearslutz threads on Dialogue and use the C.

then, experiment.

you'll be fine.

good luck!!

Thanks Tom, I hoped you'd reply. That sounds like a good start.

Hope all's going well with you.
