Playback engine - 64 samples - Can anyone run this?
Windows 7 machine - 4 gb RAM - Dual core processor 3.?? ghz - Pro Tools 10
I've never been able to use the 64 samples setting in the Playback engine while tracking. Has anyone? If so, what is your setup? Any tips? |

Re: Playback engine - 64 samples - Can anyone run this?
Yes I have, but on a MacPro machine (and PT9 with 003). Although I had to remove all my plug-ins. Haven't tried yet on PT10.

Re: Playback engine - 64 samples - Can anyone run this?
The only time I track above 64 is when I have more than a couple virtual instruments running, or I'm tracking something after already started mixing etc

Re: Playback engine - 64 samples - Can anyone run this?
The minimum buffer setting can be interface-dependent. Some interfaces will not allow for 64(especially the USB interfaces).

Re: Playback engine - 64 samples - Can anyone run this?
I have a 2nd generation Mbox Pro Firewire and have never been able to track at this setting. Would boosting my RAM up to 8GB from 4GB help?

Have you tried it without any plugins running? Have you done all of the system optimizations? |

Re: Playback engine - 64 samples - Can anyone run this?
I always run Pro Tools 10 with:
Internet Access (WI-FI) turned off and disconnected All extraneous programs shut down Virus Shield turned off Honestly... this should be enough to run with my level of CPU (Dual Core processor at 3.?? Ghz). Yes, Pro Tools is a professional level software tool but Avid is also selling it to your home-recording hobbyist. Things shouldn't be this hard and the user shouldn't have to jump through the many "suggested" system optimizations in order to "maybe" get it to function fully. |

Re: Playback engine - 64 samples - Can anyone run this?
Well yes and no - yeah your computer should and can run protools fine and you shouldn't need a ton of optimizations, but if you want to run protools as fast as it possibly can run - you have to expect that using a dual core processor is not going to deliver the same results as a quad with virtual cores etc.
At a certain point, depending on your use, it comes down to how much you're trying to process in real time and how big of a pipe you have to push it through with how much horsepower. Making your OS lean and efficient is not something unique to protools - it's recommended pretty much anytime you want to push the limits of a professional software package on any machine. For example - I have a quad - not a i7, though - and I run 64 up to a point..but I also leave my virus software, firewall, tons of background processes, lan on, sometimes have a browser running, sometimes I even have a movie running off a different soundcard. If I really wanted to push the system I'd do some more optimizations etc - but it's fine for what I do. Protools 10 came out this year - my processor is over a year old at this point and runs it like it's not even there. |
