Mac OS X worst than 9.2?????
Hi,
I am a 001 user, I have recently upgraded my system to a Pro Tools 6.4. Until now I have always worked with PT 5.2.1 in a 9.2.2 environment. I work on a 933MHz G4, installed Mac OS X 10.3.8 with a custom install, created two user accounts and disabled all the redundant stuff in PT account. Updated prebinding, repaired permissions and did all of the stuff mentioned in the Digidesign troubleshooting page and more. But I hate to say that my 9.2 system was more agile than the 10.3 one. Running the same session on 10.3 and 9.2 and using Altivec Fractal Carbon app to measure the number of operation per second yelded much better results in system 9. And I get many more DAE errors in OS X than in 9. Is it so for you out there too or am I missing something? Any help will be greatly appreciated... Ciao Ngr |

Re: Mac OS X worst than 9.2?????
How much memory did you add to your system? IS 10.3.8 cleared for PTLE 6.4? I'm running great 6.4///10.3.5///1.25gig of Mb///1.4Ghz G4

Re: Mac OS X worst than 9.2?????
I have 512 mB of RAM. It's not very clear to me how RAM is allocated for applications in OS X. I cannot assign more memory to PT as in OS9, can I? Maybe with more RAM things could get better...
Can you give me any enlightment? Thanks Ngr |

Re: Mac OS X worst than 9.2?????
Baloney...
Ok, I'll be more polite than that. 512M is enough for ProTools to work correctly, without errors using OS X. Unless you're running other programs at the same time which require lots of memory, adding more memory won't result in better performance. You can learn a lot by running Activity Monitor. Adding more memory only results in significant performance improvements if lack of memory is causing lots of paging activity, which is reported as 'page outs' in Activity Monitor.

Re: Mac OS X worst than 9.2?????
Only pro tools 7 is qualified for over osx 10.3.6 and you must use a 002 ! if you want to use your 001 downgrade to 0sx 10.3.4 and your troubles will go away " hint ! read compatabilities" there priceless.
good luck |

Re: Mac OS X worst than 9.2?????
there is no PTLE 7. I'm guessing you mean 6.7.
But even though that's the only officially qualified system for 10.3.8, there are lots of us running 6.4/001/10.3.8 just fine. There might be some other setup things you still need to do- but I would tend to agree with the RAM. I have done lots of RAM swapping in and out and my dual 1GHz runs MUCH better overall with more than 512 MB. |
