Default Purpose of Eq: The perfect mix

So what's the perfect mix? everything exactly equal all elements having room to be heard? or just whatever works? Your thoughts?

And secondly: When doing a final mix (master if you will) What do you do? where do you begin?

Default Re: Purpose of Eq: The perfect mix

Great question. I'm wondering too.
My experience with PT equalizers is: ABUSE EQ: i boost a freq 36dB (!) and it works!!!!!!

Anyway i think that the Pleasant mix secret is.... EARLY REFLECTIONS!!!!!!!!!!
but no software is able to recreate a credible ER. So i record in different resonant rooms (not reverberant) and it's fantastic to hear the distance being printed to disk.
then i EQ, very strongly, to give every track a dominant freq. (naturly not for Jazz or classics!!)

Thanks, good idea. Yesterday I tried another idea out, using slap delay at very low mixed levels to give drums a tubbyness they didnt have, worked well across the mix as well. Otherwise What i've done (and I'm no mastering engineer) is to take a look at the spectrum of each track using paz (waves plugin) then adjust that track and others balancing them so that nothing really sticks out of overlaps the others at the peaks. seems to work, but I havnt really dug in a and gone to town with this idea, just some rough stuff. Appreciate any other suggestions or ways of working
