Default Cranesong Hedd192 vs. Fatso

has this one been done already?
i was wondering how the two compare. is one better than the other? i know Hedd has convertors. which is better for getting that "analog" sound to disk?

Hedd is $1000 more. it has convertors, though. i have a Rosseta now which isn't that bad, albeit only A/D. it seems as though, aside from the convertors AD/DA, the two devices have very different approaches at achieving there target sound(analog). so you say that the Hedd does a better job with this process?

I have:

old Hedd
Fatso

I an getting a new Hedd

Get both

I have Apogee AD8000SE converters the (old) Hedd is a better A/D..

I prefer the D/A of the Apogees, this may change with the new Hedd.

(rarely use the compressors on the Fatso BTW..)

yes, they don't do the same things. they are often used together. I have an older version of that set up. the hedd without the fat switch and the distressor. the fatso is a fantastic compressor and the hedd is a fantastic convertor. both have ways of warming and coloring the sound. the fatso can be subtle or extreme whereas the hedd is less utilitarian. but I have to say that the hedd is the single greatest outboard purchase I've made. I can't sing its praises enough. I use it when I track every instrument. I use it on mixdown on the master fader and it never ceases to amaze me. it really is the secret weapon: everything I've ever thrown at it has always substantially improved. a mediocre mix or track becomes good, a good mix becomes great, and great mix becomes awesome with the cranesong hedd! the distressor is very very handy to have as well. but to me it's more of a luxury.

it's hard to compare the two because they do different things. I say get both this xmas and enjoy!

They are two different animals. If you specifically want the tape sound, get the Fatso. The Old Hedd (I haven't heard the new one) basically adds harmonic distortion to the signal which beefs it up in a nice way. This is the kind of thing where you really should listen to them side by side if possible. As Jules said, you may want to get both because they are different, but if you can only get one, I'd recommend the Fatso.

I've asked this before but nobody ever replied.

Is there any reason to get a Fatso if you own a Distressor.

I know they're a bit different, but if I went Neve 1272 into Distressor into Fatso into Apogee.

Would this serve any purrpose?

Fatso recently got me 64 tracks of audio I wasnt pissed off about in one song!

It is the analog fans - 'digital cure-all'

Jules -

So you actually track thru the Distressor into the Fatso?

Thanks

If so, do you still use the Distortion on the Distressor?
