Default SPDIF input not working on 001 card (wrong cable?)

I hooked up my sound module to my 001 using the S/PDIF sockets.
I always thought (because they look the same) that phono and spdif is the same, but it seems not, as S/PDIF must be stereo, and phono is mono(?).

I have a double lead - 2xjack to 2xPhono.

Do I need a special 2xjack to 1xSPDIF lead?
I cant find any mention of SPDIF on ebay (which is where I am getting the majority of my leads at the moment), so I am very confused.

I would still have expected to get a single mono input from the phono plug I had plugged into the SPDIF connecter, which is why I am beginning to think SPDIF is completely different to phono, as I can select SPDIF as stereo, so surely it would need two inputs, instead of just the one.

Can anyone please shed some light?

spdif is digital. All teh ither leads you mention are analog. They are not interchangable. Get a lead with phone/RCA on one end and a 1/4" jack on the other end (for stereo-operation: get 2) and connect them to the analog line-in on your 001.

The difference between an S/PDIF cable and an ordinary audio cable with RCA plugs is a difference of quality and impedance. An audio cable might work, but it's not optimal.

S/PDIF on coax cable with RCA connectors transfers two channels on a single cable.

Hmm, so my Jack to Phono SHOULD produce some sound then, when plugged into the SPDIF?

Does your sound module have S/PDIF outputs? If you're trying to connect an audio output to an S/PDIF input, you won't get any sound.

As was written above, S/PDIF is for transferring DIGITAL data. The stereo audio outputs of a sound module are not digital data.

I think you may not realize spdif is digital which is different than analog. You can't just plug an analog source into the spdif connector and have digital audio coming in.

You need a digital source (like the digital out of an effects unit) to connect to your spdif input.

No, it a dual jack lead to a dual phono lead, so it's an analogue sound.

I appreciate the help.

The proteus 2000 has SPDIF out, and I just picked up a cheap £30 module to tide me over until it arrived.

I am glad I understand the difference between SPDIF and PHONO now, thank you very much.

Once the proteus is plugged in, I'll be running 18 simultaneous channels into my 001 card... this is going to cost me a fortune in mics

BTW, if anyone reading this has an 002r, would it be possible to just swap my 001 out to an 002 with minimum fuss, and would I gain an advantage from that, bearing in mind that I am using desk/focusrite pre-amps?

002 is an easy swap for the 001, the I/O is almost the same.

18 inputs? So you've got an 8 channel box on the ADAT port already?

Yes, the behringer ADA8000 - I've not had a chance to put it through it's paces but I hear that people here are pretty opinionated about it whether it be FOR or AGAINST.

It's a nice setup although the components are quite cheap and nasty. I dont feel the need to get any more expensive gear until I really need it.

S/PDIF = Sony Phillips Digital Interface.
