Default using an a/d converter with 001.

Hey all. I was wondering what people who have used an apogee or something on their front end with 001 have to say about the quality difference. Is it really worth it to get a rosetta or something? And how exactly does it work? How do you sync the 001 to a unit like that? I'm interested in possibly doing this soon but I need some reassurance that it's worth it. Thanks.

Hello,

There are many previous discussions of this topic and a wealth of info if you search older threads for "converters" or "AD", etc., but it does seem to be a continually relevant issue. As a matter of fact, I should be receiving a used rosetta today to place on the front end of my 001, so as soon as I have a chance to take it for a test spin, I'll probably chime in with some more real-world opinions about it. Other converter brands to probably search are mytek, benchmark, lucid, rme, swissonic. There are more, some pricier, some cheaper, but that should start a chain-reaction of old posts that will help.

A good friend of mine got a Mini-Me & whatever their two channel DA is to go with it, and in his opinion it's the difference between making good home studio-sounding records & pro-sounding records. Naturally, one still has to know what he's doing though.

I have the Lucid for AD/DA. There is a difference, though I'm not sure which makes a bigger difference - the AD providing better quality going in and better clocking, or the DA providing better monitoring so I can mix better. In any case, it's made a positive difference. I didn't spend any time really doing a real-time A/B between the Lucid and the 001, though I did hear a difference between my old 001 mixes and the ones done through the Lucid.

It's a worthwhile investment assuming you already have: a good room situation, good monitoring, decent mic pres and mics - otherwise you're the putting the cart before the horse (i.e. it won't make a difference).
