Can't hear MIDI until playback

I have a Roland 88 key grand piano with built in MIDI. It's worked fine up until last week. I have not changed any settings whatsoever. I cant' hear any MIDI going through my speakers yet when I hit record and play it back You can hear it. No levels are appearing either yet there is MIDI sound.

Well the first thing to clear up is that MIDI itself has no sound, rather it's just information. Assuming you are wanting to play a VI, vs the sounds on the Roland - a couple of things to check would be that you have MIDI thru selected in PT, that you have the MIDI port the Roland is connected to available as an input device. Then, check your I/O in the session, that you have the track assigned to an instrument.

If none of that helps, you may need to explain your situation a bit more...

Such as, are you hearing the instrument while you are recording or only at play back?

I explained in my first post that I have not changed any settings and have not disconnected anything. Midi pass thru has always been turned on and I have never had this problem till last week. I only hear the MIDI during playback. In record mode no levels appear but yet after playback you can hear it but still no levels appear.

Yes I'm sometimes using xpand2 or another VI in pro tools and sometimes using Reason Rewire. I have my Instrument track routed to a submix. MIDI clips are being recorded.
