Default Crackling Pop Sound

Every so often when I'm recording I hear a crackling Pop sound. The equipment I have is the following;

Pro Tools LE, Digi 002 Rack & M-Audio Octane

I have the hardware set up as follows;

Peripherals - Digi 002

Digital Input - RCA=S/PDIF, optical=ADAT

Clock Source - internal

Sample rate - 44.1 ( Digi 002 & M-Audio Octane are bothe set at 44.1)

Is teh hardware set up correctly? Any suggestions? Thanks!

Probably a clocking issue. PT (002) and the Octane need to be synchronized.

1. In PT hardware/set-up change the clock source to ADAT.
2. Make sure the Octane is set as master and to send clock over ADAT.

Hello!

I am having a similar problem. I am running PTLE via a 002R and using an RME Octamic-D to get the additional 8 input channels (for a total of 16) via ADAT (digital). I have been noticing, popping on the ADAT channels and the pops do get recorded to track. I have the 002R set to "optical" for clocking, which I believe automatically tells the 002R to act as the slave to the RME Master. Why then would I be experiencing clocking issues. Am I missing something?

Should I be running the 002R as the master and the RME as the slave? If so, how do I do that while still using the ADAT lightpipe connection to bring the 8 digital channels from the RME to the 002R?

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Torchlight

1. 002 units do not support the SMUX protocol so will only accept 8 inputs via ADAT with a maximum Sample Rate of 48K.
2. Make sure that ADAT=Optical is also set (as well as the clock source).

Thanks Phil.

Where do I check to see if "ADAT=Optical"? In ProTools? Which menu gets me there?

Thanks Albee! I will check to see if that's the problem. I can't imagine that the lightpipe cable I am using is defective or that there is something inherintly wrong with the RME Octamic.

I went to hardware setup and it was in fact set to Optical =ADAT. This is a strange problem. For a while last night I was getting no crackling and pops, and then it would start up again if I closedthe session and got back into it. Why is ProTools and the RME Octamic not clocking perfectly together? Is it normal to have a few pops and crackles, and do I just learn to live with it? Or is there something that's not working correctly. What happens when an ADAT Optical cable is defective? Does it act like this. Also, I would add that the pops get recorded to all 8 tracks that are receiving ADAT input, and in a completely random manner.

Torchlight...... You need to set both Optical and Clock to Adat and you're good to go.
