Which means what? Anything that isn't January or December? That's kinda like bidding $1 on Price Is Right.

I have to go ahead and install PTLE 7.4 on a new 3.0 8-core. I'm not happy about this, but need to plow forward....Somebody at work went ahead and bought the computer and they are making me set it up along with DP.
Meanwhile, "back at the ranch" (home) I'm still running a 2.3 dual core PPC 10.4.11 and it's like a rock... I'm not going anywhere for a couple of years with this. How much faster do we need to go? I'm using FCP and 10.5 on some of these new 8-cores at work and they don't really seem all that much faster, or better for that matter.
IMO, I think Apple F!@#ed up on this one. I'd look for a 2.66 or 3.0 intel quad that will still run Tiger.
BTW, these new 8-core macs have a "new car electrical/plastic stink" when you start them up.. they will stink up your room when left on over night as well as heat the whole place up!

Mine has been on since the day I brought it home and it doesn't "stink". Also I'm using 10.5.1 and PTLE 7.4CS3 and it works flawlessly.

Where did you buy your 8 Core at? Mine rocks dude.

That sounds serious, you should take that computer into Apple and have them look at it. It could be the thermal paste on the CPU is leaking onto the mobo and burning something. The power consumption and heat dissipation is way down in these new Mac Pros over the previous models, and much much less than the PPC G5s, so if you're smelling something and the computer is running hot, there might be something very wrong.

Well, we bought 8 of these things, and they all have the plastic smell. Seems to be less after about a week.
Hoping core audio is going to work with DP. It's going to be 10.5.2 and PTLE 7.4.
I'll let you know how it goes.
Hey, my G5 rocks too!

Interesting. That hot/electical smell sounds strange. I would think they'd "burn" these machines in (I'm sure they do but keep an eye/nose on that). Regarding Leopard.. it sucks waiting but its worth it. A solid release we can work with is worth a lot (my 2 cents).

I have to agree with Len. My 8core 3.0 doesn't smell either, but on the other hand, quality control is way down. My PCI slots do not line up, meaning my motherboard is installed wrong. Doesn't smell, IT STINKS. I told them to send me another one, and I'm keeping this one until a satisfactory one gets here. I didn't order it from a Walmart's.... I got it directly from Apple. No not the Apple store/on line, I ordered it directly from the headquarters. So you really better check it out. As far as not being faster.... maybe not, but the ability to do more is undeniable. If you don't run software inst/plug-ins, then you're right, it ain't necessary. But, I also run Logic Pro, as well as DP5, and PTle7.4. I can see the difference. Projects that used to choke my G-5, just breeze right along now. I hated freezing/node(ing) tracks, so now I'm almost free.... Almost, because although even I said in a previous post that PT4 and Lep is cool, I just found out today that structure causes problems with Digicore Audio when using leopard. I hope they hurry with the upgrade. In the meantime, I guess I'll get better at using Logic. Oh, I also got a new car. It smelled fabulous!!!!!!!!! (Payments stink though)....
But seriously, as the others have suggested, you should get that electrical smell checked out.

It's just new car smell. I turned off energysaver and let them burn away.
