External Firewire Drive or Enclosure, what works?
Alright, I know that firewire drives with the Oxford 911 (or 912) chipset are recommended by Digi, however I know that some of you out there are using drives or drive enclosures with a non-recommended chipset. Maybe a drive that you may have already had, or "borrowed" from work, or a relative that died in a strange computer related accident... (Just so we're all on the same page as I am, the "firewire chipset" is what translates the hard drive ATA output (or whatever output the hard drive has) to Firewire (IEEE 1394). This is all inside the drive enclosure with the nifty firewire ports on the back. I call the whole thing a "firewire drive" as if I invented it.) I've been scouring the web looking for firewire drives, trying to figure out their chipsets, and have come to the conclusion that it would be really nice to have a list here, at the bane of my existance.
*If you have a USB 2.0 drive working, I'd love to hear about that. (I haven't found much info on the subject but believe that the USB bus would be bogged down by my Mbox2) *If you have drives that don't work well with protools, I'd like to hear about that too! *Maybe this could turn into a "Protools Firewire Drive Buyers Guide"? (or not) Disclaimer: This post should not usurp anything that Digi states (always take their word for it). Anyone reading this should realize that what works for one, may not work for another. Here's Digi's words on this: http://www.digidesign.com/index.cfm?...5&itemid=23126 So, whaddya got? What do I got?
Thank you for your time! wbfranklin |

Re: External Firewire Drive or Enclosure, what works?
USB2 drives are being used by some folks but are still not recommended. I bought a firewire/USB2 case from NexStar and it seems to work just fine with a standard 7200 rpm IDE drive. Hopefully another DUC'er will have the model number for the Bytecc case that works(has the 911 chipset).
