Default Outboard Pre\'s and Converters for 002...

Curious whats availible at this time to noticably improve over the 002's Pre's and A/D Converters thats not extremely expensive?

I was recording a Marshall 4x12 cab the other day with a SM57 (approx 1/2" from grill cloth - 25 degrees off speaker cone), while playing I'd align my ear with the SM57 and good tone to my ears, but once in digital waveform theres something missing I cant pin point it exactly, maybe depth and clarity, also tried a NTK at approx 18" away from speaker and it sounded very nasal and hollow (best I can descibe).

Hollow and nasal? Sounds like a Marshall to me!

Sounds like a Marshall cab to me! What amp were you using?

And you'll have trouble improving on the 002 a/d converters with less than a Swissonic AD96 or Lucid 2496, $750 a piece or so. Better preamps could certainly help, but I imagine it's more an issue of guitar/amp configuration and mic placement. I've gotten satisfactory guitar sounds from a nosey Marshall, SM57 and a 001. Had to really rail the Marshall to the point where I was concerned it would catch fire, but...

ok you got me there, its more hollow and thin recorded, in the room its got warmth and full tone.

just on NTK, the SM57 sounds more like the amp but still not as much clarity as if standing in front of amp.

Putting aside my dislike for Marshall amps, I'd suggest further experimentation with mic placement. Maybe it's the sound of the amp in the room that your ears like? Try greater distance, different angle... maybe combined close SM57 and distant NTK?
