Better to record to a FireWire drive? or 2nd Internal SATA HDD?
My Mac Pro specs:
2 x 2.93 ghz, 12-core Mac Pro 32 gigs of RAM Blu Ray Burner Dual ATI Radeon 5770 Are there any performance gains I'll get by recording to an External Glyph firewire drive versus recording to one of my 2nd SATA Drives? Specifically while running large 80+ track sessions? Or is the bandwidth the same for either drive? |

I would be using my SSD as the OS drive running Pro Tools, but I would be recording to either the FW drive or the SATA drive.

You're always better off recording to a second internal drive than a firewire drive.
And as mentioned, if you have an SSD, it's better to use it as your main system drive than a recording drive. |

Re: Better to record to a FireWire drive? or 2nd Internal SATA HDD?
I am getting ready to purchase a new Mac Pro. Would it be beneficial for me to have 4 hard drives in the computer (7200 rpm)? One for the OS and three for audio? I will be running PT10 with two HDx cards.
Thanks in advance for any advice! |

Yes, but don't buy them from Apple. They are far far cheaper from OWC or a few other places.

Consider buying an SSD for your boot drive. The Crucial M4 has great ratings for Mac OS X. You'll need a sled-adapter for the 2.5" format.
They are much cheaper pretty much everywhere other than OWC, too. Try Newegg and Amazon.

The big vendors have the most turnover too, that gets you the latest firmware, usually. Just watch the shipping from Amazon and New Egg, can be a little less than optimal for OEM/bare drives. kasper |

Yup. The nice thing about Amazon is they are quick and easy to fix a shipping mistake/damaged unit.

SSD for boot
WD Blacks for platters (RE4s if you can swing them but they're pricy, but 5 year warranty)

Re: Better to record to a FireWire drive? or 2nd Internal SATA HDD?
what's the difference in capability, or bandwidth allotted for a FW drive vs an internal data drive? I'm running sessions at 44.1, 24 bit.
