Default Record to internal drive?

I searched for this but couldn't find what I'm looking for, which I'm surprised it's not asked more.

I currently have a pretty old Mac, running a pretty old version of PT, and I'm looking into getting everything current. I saw a video today with Mitch Gallagher from Sweetwater talking about the new MacBook Pro M1Max. I know that that will have Monterey which isn't supported yet. But he said that he recorded everything to the internal drive. With the version of PT that I use, Avid recommends using an external drive. Has this changed? I thought they still recommended this, or maybe it's different now with SSD. Anyone have some input on this?

Thank you!
Paul
