Default OT, Nick Drake/Iron and Wine guitar sound

OK ,
I'm at a loss here.

Sounds like somwhere between classical and steel string. Archtop, hollow body jazzer ?

Anybody know what kind of guit boxes they are using? I know Nick Drake had many indiviual tunings for his different compositions. Also early Murray head? "Say it ain't so"

Listen to Iron and Wine (Sam Beam) "Cinders and smoke "

Any info you can contribute would be cool

Obviously the style of the artist has a major influence but I still would like to know what axes these guys are playin.

Could be time to rebuild tha t old 52 harmony

Brian

A few pictures I've seen of Nick Drake, he seems to have a clasical style guitar.

Nick played a Martin D-28 on many/most of his studio recordings. The only pictures I have seen of him playing shows him with a small body Guild M-20, but that in fact belonged to the photograher at the shoot. Yes folks, it was a prop!

His sound is probably a combination of the guitar, the mic used and the room. I've heard they used a ribbon mic, but perhaps that is just a myth.
