Stone, thanks for posting, but the thing is many of us either don't want a control surface or already own one/or mixer!

This is a great idea - I don't want or need a control surface but wouldn't mind 96 in a rack.

I don't care if it's a rackmount or a "sidecar" (mixer extension), I just want Digidesign to give the Digi 002 MORE I/O.

So if it IS a rackmount, PLEASE make it compatable with the Digi 002 on the same machine.

Come on folks (Digidesign), it's not like you can't limit it to just one expander for the Digi 002... that would give us 16 analog I/O, and 8 full bandwidth (96KHz) lightpipe channels - assuming you implement 96 KHz "split" over two lightpipe channels...

i guess they have to limit the system somewhat to encourage people to buy TDM systems. personally i just want the firewire so i can use pro tools on my laptop. i definitely will not be buying the digi002 soon or maybe ever. i like doing my automation graphically anyway...

but i think digidesign will always be on top because their software rocks.

rock on dudes

what's the point!

002 as opposed to the 001 gives you:

4x preamps instead of 2 (big deal)
96k (big deal)
firewire (great for the laptop dudes)
control surface (the only GOOD part of the 002)

it's not an upgrade but more a different product aimed at a different market. I find the guys bitching about not getting some kind of "upgrade" deal seem to to be the same windbag folks that complain that the 001 doesn't support this or that and are more interested in bragging rights of having the newest gear rather than actually making great recordings/music with what they have ...

my days on the DUC are so numbered, i'm finding the level of signal to noise ratio hear is way beyond wasting any more of my time on ..

I do remember the day when the duc was a productive place, nowdays it's a bunch of whingers having a sook because they made the WRONG decision to buy a 001 instead of a Hammerfall/Layla/Delta1010 and ACiD/Cubase/Logic whatever ..

aaaaaaaargh

if the reason anyone wants a rackmount 002 is because they don't want or need the control surface then what is the point? wouldn't that essentially be the same as a 001, save the firewire and 96k?

i think the 002 is a well thought out option for those considering the purchase of a PTLE system or a viable cross-grade option for those with a 001 that are considering the purchase of an external mixer.

and to those who are complaining about the price but at the same time asking for more I/O, etc., sit down and do the math. i'm confident you'll have difficulty balancing the figures.

seems to me that digidesign are extremely lucky to not have the 'complainants' here on their management team!

I really don't see this thread as endless complaining or bitching about Digi. It is a chance to provide some feedback to a new product. I think Digi would be happy to hear opinions. If one would judge according to posts, it looks like perhaps 30-40% of Digi users really like the Digi 002 and some of those would like to get one in the near or not-so-distant future. I think that is good news. I'm sure Digi would consider the 002 a smash hit if they sold one to every tenth 001 owner in the next two years.

I am also confident Digi made a good business decision in putting together the Digi 002. If they made just a firewire card, it would be a "me too" product as a response to the Motu firewire cards. They would receive no real respect in the audio world for such a product and could be belittled for lack of imagination. But, the 002 is inovative, breakes new ground, looks to have a good price-to-feature ratio, and meets many users needs (although, not all). So Digi looks to have made a good move.

But the rollout of the 002 does not necessarily rule out a "lesser" follow-up more economical product for other users who are more interested in portability, or perhaps, 96 khz, or whatever. This thread started because someone heard a rackmount was possible. I think we are hoping to get an answer to that question before making any major decisions.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">That is the point. Firewire interface. 96k

Actually, rather than a 'rackmount 002', a Digi 001 Rev. 2 would be great. A Firewire (no more PCI card) 001 with 96k capabilities. That's what I'd like to see. Call it a 002 rackmount or a 001 rev. 2 or a 003... Call it what you like.

I love my 001. I'd just like to ditch the PCI interface.
