I beleive you can download an update to 5.3.1 for XP for free. I'm not sure how the upgrade from 5.1 to 5.3 across OS versions works, though, so make sure you read all of the instructions and links carefully.

Honestly, I would recommend an upgrade to the last version available for the 001 for $35 at the DigiStore.

I am using my 001 with PT 6.4 and XP. $35 is all it takes. you do need your 001 serial # though.
very stable and sounds great.

Do I need to have any Pro Tools software on this computer before I download the new version? I do not have anything currently on this machine. I have not put the Digi 001 hardware in either.

No prior software necessary.
From the Digistore.

Install the 001 hardware before installing 6.4.
Also, make sure you apply cs6 and cs9 updates after 6.4 installation.

After I install the 001 hardware and restart the computer, what should i do about the Wizard and it installing the old 98 drivers? And does the I/O box have to be hooked to the PCI card before i start the computer?

You ignore the New Hardware wizard as well as the Windows Logo warning.

You should read the installation overview and instructions in the Getting Started guide. All this is covered.

If you don't have a copy, follow the Technical Documents link above.
