Default ups for power backup with PT

hi..

I`m going to install a UPS line interactive for my computer and computer monitors. The UPS only output square wave signal. I have heard bad things about connecting converters to line interactiv UPS.

I have a tdm system with 888 interfaces

So my question is. If the power fails and the 888 interfaces shuts down, Will I be able to backup the pro tools session? or do I have to run the 888 with a UPS as well? Do the 888 always have to be on to shut down the session?

Any recommandations for a good power backup and spike protection for this setup?

??

thanks

The question of the UPS' output waveshape is generally over-thought. It might be square-wave, or filtered square wave but it's passing the juice straight out of your wall through to your gear when there's no loss of power (maybe filtered). So, only worry about what a square wave would do to the sound of your gear if you're planning on printing your mixes during the 10 minutes (or whatever) you have during a power outage.

On the other hand, most true "online" UPSes run with sinewave outputs. But might be overkill for your task.

Try a test. Unplug your 888s while running a session. I bet it will break and you will not be able to save what you are doing.

Even if it doesn't break, it is a good idea to put them on your UPS. We get a lot of momentary power losses here, and having the 888/96/192s keeps the session running through those, without any "Lost connection" errors.
