Hey, Jbach, welcome to the wonderful world of
Digidesign. Here's a couple of plugs you might want to look at:

Hiss/Noise reduction: Raygun. an amazing (IMHO) noise reduction plug for well under $100 US. no-brainer to use also.

Cleaning up vocals: depends on exactly what you mean on this one. Typicaly you'd be looking at eq's (waves-good user interface, focusrite- smooth sound) compression(to level the volume Drawmer-has gate&expander, Waves, ect.)

You might look at the available bundles from Waves. a bit pricey, but in the long run, you'll end up using all of them.

Clean sound- keep your signal chain as short as possible, keep D/A, A/D conversions to a minimum. And get good monitors so you can actually hear whats going on. Tannoy, Mackie and others offer affordable entry & mid-level reference systems.

Hope some of this helps.
Happy Sounds!!!

Live in Texas,
Esteban.

Default Q: plugins/settings to reduce hiss/static

Hi
I'm a newcomer to the protools world and my audio processing needs extend to primarily 'sweetening' and enhancing existing audio.

I really need info and examples of which plugins and settings would best be used in each of the following circumstances:

1) eliminating excessive background hiss/static

2) emphasizing and cleaning up vocals

3) any other tips/suggestions for 'cleaning up' imported audio.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Dirty, but legal trick:
Download a demo of f.ex Waves Noise Reduction bundle (exellent), and work like hell on all your noise reduction for the 14 days, or whatever, until the demo period expires.

Then I’m shure you could get good results with carefully using Digi eq and comp plugins wich you already have.

And it would be free.

Believe it or not, Cool Edit 96 has a "great" noise reduction plugin on thier demo. You might be surprised. Do a search or email me and I'll send you the demo. The old demo version can be hard to find.
