Do you really need full HDX? Or will HD Native fit the bill? How many inputs do you need?

An HD Native Thunderbolt box and a HD capable interface like the Focusrite Red 4Pre or 8Pre or Antelope Orion32 HD or the Avid Omni I/O will fit into a single rack space.

If you need the full HDX card, then you would need to use an external PCIe expansion chassis like the Magma Express Box 3T which supports full length PCIe cards.

And you can't use a PCIe HDX card with any interface, has to have the proper connections for a HD/HDX card to work.

I'd be real tempted to leave the HDX rig at home and grab a Thunderbolt interface for travel(Rednet 4, Apollo or the new Slate 8 channel box).

Heck, you don't even need the HD Native box any more, unless you need more than 32 simultaneous inputs. The HD software will run standalone with any interface now.

Agree 100%

No need to lug around a HDX card in a PCIe case and as you need a Avid approved interface and digi cables etc There are way better alternatives with the same or better sound quality.

Small Digilink interface... are there any?
Lynx Aurora,
OMNI
Red 4Pre
New ORION 32 HD

None are what I would call small...

Maybe Hilo - can that take the Lynx HDX card??

Just about the same price as the Focusrite Red 4Pre, after you include the cost of the HD card. (Actually, I happen to know that you can get the Red 4Pre for under $2,000).

1U rack space isn't that much to carry.

But you still need an enclosure for the HDX card also, as Avid doesn't make an external Thunderbolt version of the HDX card yet like they do with the HD Native card.
