Upgrading to PT HD10 from 7.3
Hello new friends.
I was given an outdated rig recently: Mac G5 running Pro Tools HD 7.3 with a pair of 192s and a sync io box. I've been using Reaper for many years and am looking into biting the bullet and upgrading this system. Planning on getting a souped up Mac to replace the g5. Since the 192 is not supported past 10, I'm trying to figure out the most painless way to purchase HD 10. Is it even available from Avid or do I have to buy a used copy? Any upgrade plan offered from 7? |

Re: Upgrading to PT HD10 from 7.3
192's still work all the way thru 12.5, but the software must be HD software. The old card(s) however will not work past PT10. Then, there is the fact that you need to match the proper version(10, 11, 12) with the OS you get on your newer Mac(click the link above called "Additional Resources" and navigate to the OS compatibility page). You could buy late-model iMac i7(max out the RAM) and buy the HDN Thunderbolt package with the OMNI interface. That would give you all the IO of the 192's, plus the IO of the OMNI, which also doubles as monitor controller Certainly, a late-model Mac Pro 6 or 8 core will also do a good job(and you could get the HDN card that fits a PCIe slot). If all you want to buy is 10HD, then the second hand market is your only option

Re: Upgrading to PT HD10 from 7.3
It's not cheap, but this might be another option for you.
7 HD to 10 HD upgrade Also, as Dave said, the older cards won't work with a newer Mac because there are no PCI/PCIe slots so if you wanted to stay with a Mac you can pick up used Mac Pros on eBay pretty cheap these days and they are workhorses, I have 2 myself with a third one on a UPS truck somewhere in the US right now. 2009's, although not technically qualified work great from my experience. Another option would be to go with PT 8 HD. It's been super stable for me on one o my 2009 Mac Pro's and you can get those licenses for about $200 on eBay or through a store like Alto Music.

Re: Upgrading to PT HD10 from 7.3
Not supported is not the same as not working I am using 192's with HDX/HDN/Digigird on 12.5 no issues at all.
