Yes, You will be very miserable within minutes of your "Upgrade" to 7. This I promise you. Stay with 6.9!!!
I disagree, my system has been extremely stable. The Apogee converters need the 1.72 firmware update, then everything should be golden.

This all doesn't seem too scary, with the exception of Crizdee's issues with the Control 24 and 7, which sound pretty horrific!

I'm very unhappy with PT 7. I've been using 6.93cs3 with great success and moved up to 7.0 on my Dual 1.25 GHz which totally meets all Digi requirements.

Problems encountered (so far):

1. Core Audio is flaky. Does not always seem to want to work and took me a 2nd reinstall of PT 7 and deletions of every preference and Digisetup type file I could find before it started to work. But it is not as reliable as in 6.9.

2. Bouncing to Quicktime Movie has a bug where if you have a pulled-down QT file in your session, the bounced movie will have audio that is out of sync.

3. Trying to re-authorize a new install of IK Multimedia Amplitube LE brought up a Pro Tools error window about using up all my "Tokens" and the error kept popping up everytime I hit OK - an endless loop - required a force quit of Pro Tools to get out of it.

4. MIDI communication with my Mackie Control is lost often too, which hardly never happend in version 6.

In all, it's way too unreliable for professional use, so now I have to revert back to 6.93cs3, which is a bummer. Why the hell does Digi always seem to release software that just isn't ready yet - and charge us for it too!

Try Beat detective with alot of edit smoothing. Not working to well for me. BD is very buggy. Getting lots of errors while fades render. Not the case in 6.9. Other than that pretty good.

The jury really is still out on 7. It seems like for the most part it's either a sweet ride or horrific... depending on who you talk to.

I would like to do this before my WUP expires in January. I wonder if we'll see 7.1 by then? It would a lot easier to make the move if my 6.9 wasn't running so well!

First, Carbon Copy Clone your system drive with PT 6.9.x and then you're set if you need to go back. Read up on compatability both plugins and hardware, systems etc. Know going into it what you may have to wait on (not much at this point).

Now, I did that about a month ago, and as of today I have NEVER once had to use the cloned drive or go back to PT 6.9.

Here's my system:

G5/dual 2.0
Dual flatscreen monitors
3 Meg RAM
Magma 7 slot 64 bit expansion chassis
One HD core, Three HD Process Cards
Mac OS 10.4.3
PT 7.0
CONTROL 24
All audio on Firewire Drives

I'm working on a new project right now that I recorded using Pro Tools 6.9. I had no problem converting all the recordings to Pro Tools 7 after tracking. I have now been working on this project for several weeks. I've done MASSIVE amounts of Beat Detecting on the main drums (12 tracks) and on auxiliary drum tracks that we recorded to make our own loops. To me if anything Beat Detective seems better (but I think that's because everything seems a little more zippy in Tiger and PT 7). I've now gone through guitar overdubs, bass overdubs, keyboard overdubs (including lots of piano overdubs using IVORY), vocals etc. and everything has been great. NOT A SINGLE CRASH since I upgraded.

In the midst of this project, I had to do recalls on every mix (10 songs) on a project I finished LAST November. Every single session recalled and played back without a single glitch. That session was at 88.2k by the way.

All my plugins work, with the exception of Waves Guitar bundle which is being worked on. So all my Oxford plugins work, MDW, Sound Toys (I never had Echo Boy), McDSP, all the other Waves stuff, URS EQ's, etc, plus all my instruments like Ivory, Stormdrum, EWQLSG Orchestra and Choir, and most all of the other NI instruments.

Read the compatability docs, get a copy of Cocktail and Carbon Copy Cloner, make a backup, pick your two free plugins, and dive in.

Hey RTC, Glad to hear your system is running great. How much work was it to upgrade your plugs? Any problems? Good luck with your projects...

Does anybody have an informed opinion on attempting to upgrade my Quicksilver 800 w/dual 1.33 PowerLogix card to Tiger and ProTools 7. I know this isn't a recommended system, but I'm inclined to try unless anybody knows it wont work.
