Default m powered midi set up roland patches no sound on playback

Hi,
I am a beginner. I have m powered pt 7 with ozonic hooked up to a Roland xp 80. I am using Leopard 5.2 so that may be part of the problem however, I read the booklet and set things up as best I could. I have a feeling I messed up somewhere.
I can see the midi. It records it and plays it but on playback you can see the meters going but there's no sound.
I tried to assign a patch sound or channel to the xp - 80 but when I go into my folder for the sounds the files for the sound come up looking like unreadable .midman and PT won't open them and I don't know what to do to convert them for PT to take them. Probably multiple problems going on here but I need to get things going. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
