Default Is PT9.0.6 stable under W7 64?

hello All,

I came to PT9 from Nuendo for better name recognition, but my PT9.0.6 is either very 'finicky' or unstable!

Almost every time I start it back up something new has become an issue. project sample rate is different, can't find program or it claims it's either uninstalled or being controlled by another application . . .

PT is now claiming that it's un-installed or being controlled by another program, and so here I am posting this thread and begging for help.

I am running the latest W& 64 with SP1 installed and use LYNX AES16e with latest version2 drivers and firmware. I just did a PT repair via W7 uninstall, with no fix.

Suggestions urgently needed. This will be the 3rd time I have installed PT9.

Thanks,
William

Well GrievousAngel, all I can say is "welcome to ProTools"

I myself am in far too deep to take my advice, but my advice to you is: get out now before your commitment is too deep. ProTools provides almost zero benefit if you're on a PC. Look at the money you spent as a lesson and go buy anything else.

1. Do each and every one of the Avid suggested system optimizations. Each and every one. You may have missed one or more of them:

http://avid.custkb.com/avid/app/self...p?DocId=367983

2. Make sure each and every one of your plugs are the latest versions. You may have missed one or more of them:

http://avid.custkb.com/avid/app/self...p?DocId=343311

3. Do each and every thing suggested here, too. You may have missed one or more of them:

http://duc.avid.com/showthread.php?t=300050

4. When you do solve the issue, take an Acronis image. Take another Acronis Image every time you make a change to your C drive, like installing something or tweaking something:

http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing...cts/trueimage/

While this all may seem like a lot of fussing around, the good news is that you will eventually fix your rig and be good to go.

Hope this helps !!!

To the OP follow EGS's advice. You CAN get PT 9.06 to run very stable with W7, but you MUST perform athe tweaks. Beyond that there are plugins that can create stability issues, by which I mean make sure you are up to date and legal. I run many UAD, McDSP, Massey, IKM etc. along with ahandful of wrapped VST's witout issue, not to mention several VSTi's.

Not usually on the tweaks list but currently real user issues is the "autosave bug"...my advice is to turn it off and save early and often manually. There can be memory nags with PT and W7, so I suggest turning backups down from 32 (default) to 24, and do not leave ANY programs running in the background of the system...ie. don't have Firefox churning...that is a notorious mem hog.

After many years of trying I found that my PT 9 W7 is now as stable and crash proof as my MacPro PT9/HD rig, which is to say rock solid.

To everyone on this thread:

Do ya'll have a dedicated PT computer or do you share duties on a 'normal' PC? At this point, I am using one PC for all my computing needs including PTs.

Are ya'll dual booting or just making W7 mods when running PTs? Are their any clever ways to change computer configurations w/o dual boot? I am setting up a selective boot using msconfig via Run. Better way to get PC tweaked for PTs?

Later,
William

Which one of those tweaks are going to solve my issue with 7 midi tracks showing up in the midi editor when I have only 1 in my session?

Which one of those tweaks are going to solve my issue that occurred only after installing 9.0.6 update on top a of healthy 9.0.5 which BTW never needed any of the so called "tweaks."

This is a good reason why I never perform an update without backing up the system drive first(especially if its running well). I for one, use a cheapo off-lease PC for non-audio stuff. Every time you connect to the internet, even if you don't open a browser, your system is a potential target(something I also hate, but deal with). Look at ebay for an off-lease P4 rig for less than $100 if you can swing it(I realize that not everybody can). if you aren't hip to Acronis True Image, its worth a look

My desktop is my workhorse. I do everything on it. Music, video editing, creating, and video effects, graphics, picture editing, word processing, and internet. I need all of these things at the same time for my workflow and I have no big problems.

This may not work for everyone, but my workflow demands it.

And I'll second Albee on Acronis. Its saved my @ss a couple times.
