Some Panning questions
When mixing two voices, one male and one female some thoughts would be greatly appreciated. The main voice is the male voice. The female voice is this recording is more of a background to the male voice. Does anyone have any thoughts as to the best way to pan the background (female) voice.

Re: Some Panning questions
This is a dificult question to answer with so little info.
Is it only the two voices, or are there other intruments in the mix ? If you want the femal vocal to be in the background you could add more reverb to that voice. Maby some chorus to widen the sound and differenciate it from the lead vocal. Also, adding the some eq to the male voice could bring it in front of the female vocal. There is no wrong or right, just what sounds best for that particular session. |

Re: Some Panning questions
Good advice above. Here's some more ideas. 1-Pan each track just slightly off center. 2-Pan the main vocal center and aux send the BGV to an aux track with the short mono delay on it(16-21ms) and pan the original BGV to one side and the delayed signal to the other side. 3-Insert a pitch shifter on the BGV and set each side off just a little(like 5-9 cents, + on one side and - on the other side). As Chris said, there's really no wrong way as long as you like the result.

Re: Some Panning questions
I also like splitting the BGV with a delay and thinning it out with EQ, try a heavier hand with the comp on the BGV so it sits back and behaves!
