largest firewire drive?
What's the largest 7200 rpm Firewire drive available? Is there a 300 gigabyte? 400 gigabyte?
Thanks Greg Frey |

Re: largest firewire drive?
I think the current largest single 7200 rpm drive is 250.

Re: largest firewire drive?
That one is two 250 GB drives in one box. Not sure if there are issues w/ PT because I think those are RAID 0, which PT does not officially support.

Re: largest firewire drive?
The RAID system of the LaCie drive is hardware. Digidesign does not support software RAID solutions. I've seen two of those LaCie drives in a studio.

Re: largest firewire drive?
After formatting, how much disk space is available on a 250 gig drive?

Hard drive manufacturers use 1000*1000*1000= 1 GB where computers see it as 1024*1024*1024 = 1 GB, that's where the discrepancy lies. So, any time you format a drive, it will always read approximately 93% of the manufacturer's reported capacity. So, a formatted 250 GB drive will report about 232 GB in the OS. As drives continue to get bigger, this discrepacy will get larger proportionately, and I think what will happen is the drive manufacturers will eventually switch over to 1024^3 labeling of their drives. The first one to do it could even make it an advertising scheme and call it "True size" or some stupid spin like that. |

Re: largest firewire drive?
You can add four 250 GB Hard drive and a Sonnet Tempo Raid card inside a G4 MDD and have one huge 900+ GB volume. But as in any RAID solution without error correction, one drive goes, all data is lost.

Re: largest firewire drive?
bad jitter, since English is not my first language, can you explain a little bit more about drive and drives. It seems that I don't understand what you mean.
I (most of the time) use the built-in spell checker of OS X in Safari (command-shift- but it just check if the words exist, so sometime I may write weird things, à la BabelFish. JC |
