Default Eleven Rack latency

Hello all

I finally got my 11R up and running (with some help from the forum).
But now when I finally want to record with it there is always a little bit of latency that's pretty annoying.

My set up is:
Computer with windows 7 + Pro Tools 10.0.1
11R connected to computer via usb cable.
11R connected to monitor boxes (yamaha 50M) via main output (on the back of the 11R).

So I have my 11R connected with two different ways, directly to the computer and than to boxes via main output.
At first I was only connected through usb and listening back with headphones, so I thought the latency must be some kind of slow computer or bad usb cable. So I connected it also to the boxes but the latency stays.

I thought the main output was a latency free path for the sound to go, because it does not has to travel the computer.
Doesn't the 11R has somekind of latency free mode, where you hear what you play without it going through pro tools???

Maybe I'm just routing the outputs wrong.
How do you guys play and listen to your sound while playing??

Well I'm gratefull for anykind of help.

Are you playing with Pro Tools open or in standalone?

Did you change the buffer size?

Mac? PC? Computer specs? (esp. CPU, memory, disk descriptions/specs etc.) OS version? Pro Tools Version? What are the specs (rpm at least, but make/model etc. useful as well) of your system hard drive and separate audio drives.

You are talking about latency when just playing or when tracking with Pro Tools?

Please list which ones of the recommended System optimizations have you done (see the "Help us Help ..." link near the top of this web page for links to that info. Make sure you follow the instructions for your OS version. These steps are critical for allowing Pro Tools to run at low buffer/low latency settings.

What are all the settings in the pro Tools Setup>Playback Engine dialog? A large buffer setting there will cause latency Can you run at 128 or 64 samples? (you likely will not be able to do this reliably until you properly optimize/setup your computer). Make sure you have the Eleven Rack selected as the playback engine device, don't use it via an aggregate IO device.

What is the session sample rate?

Do you have any plugins in use in Pro Tools? Which ones? Diable them all for initial testing.

Well no optimizations done so far.

The latency problem only occurs when tracking OR when pro tools is open, because than the sound seems to go through it instead of going directly to the boxes.

So far I haven't changed the buffer size.
My "Playback Engine dialog" settings are

Playback Engine: Eleven Rack
Buffer Size: 512 Samples
Host Processors: 4
CPU usage limit: 85%
Host Engine : not checked
Delay compensation engine: none
Plg-in streaming buffer: size=level2, Optimize for....=not checked

Pull your buffer down to 128.

Also bumping up the sample rate to 96k should provide less latency as well - also the 11R sounds dramatically better at 96k - I would suggest always using 96k when in standalone.

If your 11R is connected via USB you can change these settings in Control Panel. If Pro Tools is open you can change them in the hardware setup.

As far as your Sandra Report, looks like you only have one hard drive. That will cause problems recording and playing back lots of tracks. Also the hard drive is only 5400RPM, you should have a minimum of 7200RPM.

As you guys suspected it was the buffer size.
I just changed it to 128 but after a few seconds of recording I get

You are running out of CPU power. Remove some Native plug-ins or increase the CPU Usage Limit in the Playback Engine (-9128)

I could just turn the usage limit to 100% but does this error really mean.

For Pro Tools you do that when you create the session. 96k is much more demanding on the CPU, so if you are having problems at 44.1, you will have even more with 96k.

But try it in standalone mode (pro tools closed) - just go to control panel in windows, click Avid Eleven Rack, and change the sample rate.

Adding a dedicated recording hard drive, internal or external, would probably help quiet a bit.

But for now, try 256 for the buffer.

I'll try that.

But just to get this clear.
There is no way for the guitar sound comming out of the 11R to go directly to the monitor boxes??
I mean like two channels with the same sound. One channel going to pro tools and the other directly out.

If this is really the case than the programmers at avid really messed up for this one.
Before the 11R I had to mic my amp and everything went (only) through the mbox mini AND no latency whatssoever.....
same notebook.
