Default Automating complexity via controller keyboard

I've got a breakdown in a song and I've decided an increase in pattern complexity is needed at this point.

I'm increasing complexity using my keyboard's pitch wheel, but being new to the MIDI realm I don't know how to record information to a track without overwriting existing data.

i've worked out how to do it pointing and clicking with a mouse - but using a keyboard controller to trigger these things is new ground for me

Any advice to the process?

You need to turn on MIDI merge.
On the transport window (Window->Transport), making sure you have the MIDI view turned one (View->Transport->MIDI Controls), click the button that looks like a sideways "Y".

MIDI merge is covered in Chapter 19 of the Pro Tools Reference Guide.

This button seems inactive, is there another step to turn it on perhaps?

Will 'merge' also allow me to record mod/pitch wheel changes to pre-mapped MIDI data?
