Yes, you can. This is something I found interesting, and happen to have it saved. Its from the DUC.

"Locking up" two Macs OR PC's, with each computer hosting a single Digi 001,
is not hard to do at all. You can "fly" tracks from one machine to the other
if you so desire. You can even use one as a "virtual" multitrack recorder,
and send up to 18 tracks from one out of the 8 analog outputs, 8 lightpipe
(adat) outputs and the stereo S/PDIF output and into the corresponding inputs
on the second Digi 001 on the other computer. That way, you get fewer tracks
(24 + 18 = 42, but every individual "part" remains on its own, discrete fader.
You can even SUBMIX some of the tracks in the first Digi 001 so that they
share some of the 18 available outputs, essentially getting back to a full
48 tracks. Either way, by bringing those tracks in as "aux tracks" in the
other Digi 001 / PTLE, you can then mix them all on the single machine and
avoid having to deal with the two different machines for mixing. The downside
to that is that you'd probably need a FAST computer to handle all the tracks,
aux tracks and plug ins on a single machine, and edits would need to be done
on the individual computers. Upside is that you really wouldn't need a super
fast machine to simply play the tracks back on the secondary ("virtual multitrack")
computer. And if you're not automating effects, you can still put plug ins on the one
("source") machine and control panning, fader moves, etc. on the second machine.
Lots of possible variations if you think it through.

There's a few hurdles and inconvieniences to consider and overcome, but it's
certainly "do-able". The thing that kind of annoys me is that I'm certain
Digidesign is aware that this is possible, and they still make it so you can
only use a single Digi 001 on a single computer. You'd get most of the functionality
of a "dual Digi 001's on a single computer" with these methods, but you have
to own a second computer. You get more tracks, but you have to buy a second
computer and a second Digi 001.

Why dont you record 16 channels on one system?
PTLE is more then up for that.
Just get some 8 channel ADAT-interface and you have 16 inputs.

If you get an extra laptop or PC there you could use the 002R as adatinterface. Just create a session with 8 channels, and route the channels to the adat-connection. Then use the other pc to record it all. After everything is recorded you will not need the link between the 2 anymore. Doing it like this will save you the trouble in syncing up the 2 and/or perhaps having to transfer those tracks afterwards.
