PT 6.1...and still no auto delay compensation!!!

With the announcement of PT 6.1 at the NAB, there is still no auto delay compensation.

I guess this is just another pipe dream promise that Digi has been selling and promising us for a while now.

Why is it so important? If I insert an analog Comp for example, it have some little delay, is it true? And in analog mixers we'd worked this way always. Are the phase problems so important with litlle delays?

One of the problems is if you are recording through an effect onto another track and need to drop in there will be a hole in the recording while the latency catches up. Makes for horrible gaps and clicks.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">I can hear phasing with just 10 samples of offset on two identical regions played at the same time and start to hear some cancellation at only 2 samples of offset. Granted there is a difference between that and latency on effects (because the effect itself will actually mask the issue in most cases). But, none the less, in full "digital" mix, a little latency goes a long way (...bad way) and starts to add up pretty quick making things start to sound muddy.

The only time it should be a huge problem is when using multiple mics on one source. For ex. Live drums.

I don't see how it's a problem with other things like Bass & Guitar.

If the Bass player had played his part 2-4 samples late, would you make him redo his part because of smear.

I just don't hear that buld up that everyone talks about.

On multiple mic stuff it is an issue.

And as far as playing into plugins and avoiding latency:
Pro Tools is amazing software, but it can't see into the future.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">If you want your drums to sound small & thin try putting different plugins over each track without using delay comp. I've done many remixes for people that did not understand this. You'll have big phase problems. It is very important.

Can't wait for the day that we won't have to deal with this.

If you want to see what I mean, duplicate a track, put a timeadjuster plugin on both, and have one set to the default 4 samples, while the other has 5. If you insert an analog compressor in PT, it will have the delay induced by the conversion process, a small delay between 90 and 100 ish samples, depending on your converters, and which mixer you use (dithered, non-dithered, stereo, surround). It's not the analog compressor making the delay, it's the trip through the D/A and A/D converters.

And in analog mixers we'd worked this way always.

Not always, but YES!

For me it's especially bothersome, as I'm into doing a lot of parallel processing (ie blending a processed signal with a non-processed signal) and it gets to be a lot of math, timeadjustering and nudging. And, as others have pointed out, it can be a big issue in a multimic setup, if the same delay is not being applied to all the tracks.

However, Produceher is right, on a single track that isn't multed or isn't being picked up by multiple mics/tracks, converter delay is not really an issue.

All told, it'll be VERY nice when auto-delay-compensation comes to PT.
