440bx vs Athlon system
Hi,
I'm thinking of upgrading my PIII 800MHz 440bx system to a 1.4GHz Athlon system. Will I see much improvement? Is it worth it? Cheers. smit1_uk

Re: 440bx vs Athlon system
Hi,
Buy Asus A7V133 which is ALSO approved by Digidesign. You will get double the performance of a PIII. I had a PIII850 w/440BX and I have 1.4Ghz Athlon now. I get close to double the performance (about 85%better).

Re: 440bx vs Athlon system
( oh another asus cheerleader ) buy asus and only asus asus is da one and da only one stick our heads in da sand fun fun fun.......yes a VIA i said VIA VIA chipset made by VIA not asus, the VIA-KT133(A) will out preform the INTEL440bx chipset in most cases. but digi has tested the two chipsets, running lets say a 800 AMD with a VIA against a INTEL440bx using a 800 P111 (and they never will).however the 1.4 athlon in ANY board with a DIGI approved VIA chipset will outpreform a 440bx using a intel pentium 800mhz cpu, ASUS has nothing to do with it, you dont need a ASUS brand motherboard to run DIGI001 http://www.msicomputer.com you may consider the K7T-VIA KT133-A TURBO LE or if you want to boldly venture out the MSI 845 P1111 looks promising also ABIT makes vary good motherboards ..just look closely at chipsets and do your homework but if you dont have the time you can alwaye jump on the SAFE asus bandwagon and chant the ASUS cheer!!!! ..................HURLUP

Re: 440bx vs Athlon system
Hi,
yeah I know what you mean about "everyone loves Asus", I've built loads of great machines with Aopen/Abit/MSI boards. Everyone went for Asus since the P3BF 440bx board(which was excellent & still is!) I think people are moving on though now, but if Asus come back with another great board who are we to argue? smit1_uk

Re: 440bx vs Athlon system
ya funny isn`t it, , I agree asus continues to build hi quality boards they may be the 1st to solve some of the p1111 problems, but maybe not, anyway for now i think the ABIT KG7 is a good AMD-ddr BOARD ithas the asme chipset as the ASUS A7M but it ofers 6 PCIs and no onboard so sharing IRQs is not a big problem like with the ASUS it also has onboard RAID that also frees up PCI IRQ sharing therefor allowing you to use your puter for more then one application,, i also feel another good substitute for the ASUS A7V-133 is the MSI-K7T-TURBO-LE AMD-SDRAM it uses the KT-133Achipset 6 PCI with onboard promise RAID,this is in my opinion the best bang for the buck, geting back to your question i think i would stay with your cool-quite p111....these AMD boards all use lots of electricity and run vary vary hot, so if you can wait for the the chip makers to come up with a good p1111 solution you can sit back and make musuc with a cool smooth p1111 i think its just a matter of time HURLUP

Re: 440bx vs Athlon system
decisions, decisions mmmm, my current motherboard is the Asus CUBX-E 440bx with onboard ATA100, its a great setup with the P111 800MHz, 2 30GB Quantum Fireballs ASA and 512MB RAM. I built this machine just for the 001 well over a year ago and I cant see what could improve, yeah you may get some more tracks and a few more plugins but I make electronic music and very rarely use more than ten tracks!
mmmmmm. thoughts?

Re: 440bx vs Athlon system
Hello Hurlup!
Could you please help me with some uppgrade questions from the Abit BE-6 to the Asus A7V133 or VIA-KT133(A)board? I wonder what FSB I should run at, 200 or 266? (Of course depending on the cpu) What`s the different of an Athlon and Duron cpu? What about the harddisk controller, is it supporting Raid, ata100 or something like that? Do I have to use a special dedicated disk for Raid use? Please let me know I want more plugs at the same time I know this was a lot of dumb questions for the most of you people out there but I hope you can help me. Greetings from Norway. Svein Egil |
