If I were in charge at Avid, I would......
I would buy out Cockos (the boys that make reaper), have them code the new protools; if I could not buy them out, I would aggressively pursue their talent and get them working at digidesign to re-code protools from the ground up. They are a small outfit, they are new to the market and Avid's user base has migrated to them.
I would Stop making proprietary hardware and plug-ins and go native. I would also......... |

I would also acquire AIR and have them work on VST, AU versions of all AIR instruments....

Re: If I were in charge at Avid, I would......
I would have R&D air tight with Apple, Microsoft, Intel and AMD and have a team of software engineers preparing a roadmap for 24, 48 core Mac, Intel on Microsoft X128 and x256 software. Ok i'm stretching it a bit but I would have people working on next generation of software for the next generation of hardware (on the mac pc front).

Don't think the Reaper folks will go for it. I remember Microsoft was offering close to twice what Goggle was at one time and still coudn't pull people.
Avid must be a real drag to work for at this point. |

Here we say "they need to make me smile real wide" :) Overall i agree. Personally, and of course thats just me, assuming i was looking for a job, and i am not, i will not consider too much a position with this company, just because it shows pretty well how little they care for their own business. Just my very personal opinion of course. But so far... this is my feeling. Great product (when it works, on certified stone age platforms) but incredibly awful customer service. No way. |

Re: If I were in charge at Avid, I would......
The goal of this thread is to make suggestions for Avid as if you were in charge; Like what you would do to take this company in the right direction not whether or not you would work for them.
Back to the purpose of this thread: If I were in charge at Avid, I would......... Package a Native Protools with all of the instruments in the PTIEP for 499.00 Let's see; Protools M-powered is 249.00; PTIEP 299.00; close but no cigar. Change Protools M-powered to N-Powered (the N is for Native) and get rid of LE. |

[QUOTE=TOM@METRO;1580007] And rename it Peaper..............or Dave Tools. But seriously, I would lift the 18 input limit and introduce the 004R with 2 mic preamps and 4 ADAT ports for either 16 inputs at 96K SMUX, or 32 inputs at 48K. Then introduce the Command16 controller with 8 channel expanders........

Re: If I were in charge at Avid, I would......
Ok something constructive. Here is what I would like to do and maybe what the folks that run Avid would like to do.
Put out some screaming HD cards that make having HD worth it. Put out some real LE hardware like Tom's listed. Stop all development on 32 bit PT except bug fixes and ADC. Hire some talent and get 64 Bit PT out this year. As a business person what I WOULD is look at each of these things and see if it was going to generate enough profit to do it. It's easy to be idealistic when you are a startup, when you,ve got hundreds of people's livelyhood resting on your shoulders things look a lot different. The only win/win I can think of is if Digidesign could be spun off from Avid at a decent price and get small and hungry again. |

Re: If I were in charge at Avid, I would......
I would do a Steve Jobs style launch some two years after I acquired Pro Tools and announce the following:
Pro Tools Native and Pro Tools Pro. Both version would be the same (unlimited) and would include many features such as non real time bounce option/mastering burning/VI included and so on. I would announce new audio interfaces that come as 8in/8out racks. Perhaps partnering with Apogee for the converters. Multiple units could be added to PT. A lower cost 2in/2out would also be available. PT Pro is a new system based on a dedicated Linux computer that is part of the system. No more dancing to Apply/Microsoft's dance. This system would be supported for at least ten years offering a commitment to its customers who invest. Many optional hardware extras available for this system from add on processors to rack drives. Pro Tools would be king under my superb leadership |
