Got no money and want to upgrade Mac
I have a G3/300 (the beige one Digi recommends you not use - although it seems to work fine) and have an opportunity through work to grab a G4/400 pretty cheap. I need to know if this is a worth while upgrade, will I see any significant improvement going to the G4?

Re: Got no money and want to upgrade Mac
In the Dave C test thread a 400Mhz G4 is 50% faster than my 300Mhz beige G3.
It can handle 9 tracks of 24bit 44.1Khz audio at 24bit instead of 6. In realworld terms I think this would make it a worthwhile purchase if you're getting the G4 cheap. With the performance of sonnet upgrades being so good you could sell the G3 and put some of the money towards an 800Mhz or 1Ghz G4 upgrade later on and then more than double the performance again. I'd go for it, at least you'll get a faster model to tie you over. It's something I'm planning on doing if I can't find a good deal on used QS dual Ghz G4 later in the year when I've got more saved up. |
