Default Summing Amp/Buss/Mixer

Anyone using a summing mixer with their ICON setup?

What's the best way to interface the mixer with the XMON?

If you're just using it as a summing device, it shouldn't change anything really. Ultimately you'll need to bring the mix back into PT for printing. You'd simply monitor the mix as your only source and use the X Mon for volume, speakers, talkback etc.

If you're talking a full fledged mixer with center section etc, you'll have to decide which to use for those functions and if that's the mixer, then the X Mon may not be needed at all or only used for select things.

I'm just talking about a 8 or 16 ch. summing mixer (Dangerous 2-buss. Chandler MINI-MIXER, etc.) Most summing busses have only stereo outs... so are you plugging those into inputs on a 192 and then tying up another 2 outputs going to the XMON Main IN for monitoring?

dmazurek, Are you using a summing mixer with your setup?

I have a Neve 8816, what I did was to bring the Mix out of the summing amp
into one of the stereo inputs of the icon ( stereo 1 I think)
that way, when im mixing in the box, I monitor trough the main mix out of the Icon, and if I mix through the neve, I monitor trough stereo 1 input

Now, I do record the mix into protools, but a friend goes to a Diferent software ( sadie) but in general the thing is you wont be able to Bounce to disk

Hope that helps

Thanks. If the output is plugged into the XMON, what do you have plugged into the 192 in order to print the mix coming off the Neve? Does the 8816 have more than one stereo pair of outputs?

Ill try to help you as much as I can, since i didnt design my patchbay, i just told the tech what I wanted

sorry if im beeing redundant

The X mon works, basically as a routing center for all audio coming in and out of the system, having said that

1 of the 192 works as the oath for the speakers ( left, right, center, etc )

another one for your cues ( heaphone mixes, etc)

and you shoul use 8 ins for stereo inputs like cd, dat, whatever taht go to your
stereo 1 , 2 and 3 ins

Basically protools will guide the audio however you tell PT to do it

If you are in the box, then output 1 and 5 of the first 192 will go to your speakers

in my particular case I have 5 192s (big set up )and 2 neves 8816

my 192's 4 and 5 ( each one with an aditional d/a card for 16 outs) are conected to my neves

In protools I just assign the outs of whatever trck I want to send to the correspondent interface

now, how do I monitor this?

If I didnt have an Icon (which i do) the neve has a monitor output to go to the speakers so you could in theorie connect directly to them

since i do have an Icon, what I did is to connect that output to the stereo in 1 so I can monitor what is coming out of the neves

however , when ever I want to "print" the signal, the 8816 has a Mix output, whis is the one I use to feed into protools again

It sounds a little confusinf, but its really easy

Hope it helps

Thanks for the info... the fact that the Neve has a separate monitor out and you have plenty of I/O to spare answers all my questions!

Glad to help

I usually dont tell people how to work, since every studio is the own universe
of every engineer, however I would highly recomend you to try to center everything in your studio around the monitor section of your Icon
it will make your life easier

Take care
