It's part of the developer tools included on every (Snow) Leopard installation DVD.

Install Quartz Debugger from the SL disc , under developer tools.

- Open Quartz Debugger (search under spotlight)
- drop down Beam Sync menu
- click "Disable" beam sync
- Leave app open (you can minimize but do not quit)

Someone has also made a free app called QuartzSimple that you can use as well.

If you are using video,Perhaps as I have found it is the audio hooked up to newer QT video formats that causes this. Try disable the video from PT and see it pt works fine by itself

See! PT9 works great! Apple just wants to sell 12 cores, so PT can sort out the video stuff in real time. Anybody got 5K?

I've seen the stutter issues on 12 core Mac Pros of the last release too. Seems it's not purely to do with the machine speed........

Pro Tools video stutter is nothing to do with CPU speed. OK a very slow machine is probably much worse, but videos that play fine in FCP or QuickTime have issues in PT. It's the way SL handles graphics.... apparently.

Thanks for the head-up on QuartzSimple. This really helped out. The jerky-QT thing was driving me nuts!

Also, try the BeamSync disable work around, usually works.
Im having jerky playback issues in PT9 as well. What is Beamsync?

Also, would it be better if the video was encoded to a different format that pt9 likes to play? If so, what video codec should i encode to (regardless of quality) that PT9 will play fine?

As I've said before, it is nothing to do with the CODEC, although some will playback better than others, if it plays back fine in QuickTime, but jerky in PT9, then the issue is Beamsync.

As for what beamsync is, my understanding is it's a display buffering technology that helps reduce tearing in fast moving images.
