PT crashed when stopping a take.

Hello.

My PT crashes when I press space to stop recording take. On Average it does this once every 3 weeks. The Spinning ball of doom appears and that's it.

Anyone else seen/have this problem?

My rig is a MAC PRO 2.66 Quad core.
OS X 10.6.2.
3gb of RAM.
PT 8.03cs2 HD2.
Lynx Aurorua 16.
UAD-2 Quad.

This Happens even when there no plugs running. It is random and I have lost takes, having the client to perform again.

My PT also crashes every I quit the application and becomes very unstable when using playlists of any length of time.

Please help if possible.

You definitely want to put some more RAM in there for a start, 3GB is nothing.

What file format are you using (wav aif SDII)? Also what disk are you recording to? Internal SATA, FW400/800, RAID, USB? Does it only crash when you use the spacebar to stop or does it crash regardless of how you stop the recording? Have you tried the usual volumes & pref trash and permission repair?

I have another 3gb on order, so that'll sort that'll sort the memory out. regardless of RAM though, it crashes on the simplicist of sessions. For example, a voice over a backing track.

Recording in eiter AIFF or WAV at 96Khz or 44.1Khz. The drives I record to are either on a dedicated internal audio SATA drive of external FW800.

It doesn't matter what I press to stop recording, Spinning pizza of DOOM (SPOD) appears.

Pref trash has been done too.

Hi,

Although you may have no plugins in the session at the time they can still cause issues like this!

I had a similar problem in snow leopard with it quitting when closing and it was a McDsp plugin causing it. it was a process of elimination to find the culprit, by removing all plugins from the plugs folder except the stereomixer.dpm and then adding plugins back into the folder a few at a time.

What record mode are you using? Quickpunch or Trackpunch by any chance?

I'll bet a dollar that it is plugin related. Follow Chris's suggestions.
Also, make sure that you purge your trash after using the pref/database app.

Something similar to this has happened to me 2 times now within the last 6 weeks. For me, I was recording a take and all of a sudden the spinning beach ball appeared. The project was still playing back and their recording is still coming through, but Pro Tool's GUI freezes. It is scary when this happens because you don't know whether to stop things right then so that the client doesn't record their best take and you be left without it, or whether to keep it going and hope Pro Tools pulls through. In both cases of mine, Pro Tools didn't pull through and I had to eventually Force Quit. If I remember right, I believe I was able to still pull the take out of the audio folder and use it.

For me, it seemed to do this when I opened a WAVES TDM plug-in and adjusted a parameter while recording. One time it was Renaissance EQ, the other time I think it was either Renaissance EQ or CLA-76 Blue Stripe.

I have very much the same specs as you, but I have 11 GB of RAM.

Cool, thanks for your help. I'm not in any record mode, no punch.

I am curerntly updating all plug ins and gathering a list of them.

I have also had the problem with the GUI freezing. It's a complete show stopper.

Updating the waves plug ins (SSL and Native Power pack) Seems to have stopped this.
