Default Will 882 16 bit version transfer 24 bit S/PDIF?

Hi,
Could anyone tell me if the old 16 bit 882 interface will transfer audio at 24 bit through S/PDIF?

I am not clear from the digi docs between the 16 bit and 20 bit versions of the 882. The 20 bit version doc does not specify this.
http://akmedia.digidesign.com/suppor...uide_29361.pdf
and I have not, so far, been able to find a guide for the 16 bit 882.

I was wondering if it would be possible with an optical to co ax converter, or two, to get 24 bit digital audio to/from the built in optical S/PDIF on a MB pro with the kind of optical lead that used to come with portable minidisk players.

Does anyone have any experience of doing this, or something similar?

Thanks

BD

You are referring to the 1U rackmount 882 that works with PTIII/Mix, right?

I'm pretty sure that all of the AES/EBU and SPDIF connections on these interfaces are 24 bit. I know for sure this is true on the 888s, and should be true of the 882s as well. The 882-16 or 882-20 just designates the ADA converters bit depth.

I have used a HOSA ODL-312 to convert the mac's optical i/o to AES/EBU. One thing I'll caution you on is not all macs with the digital i/o can sync to an external clock. The option for clock source may remained grayed out in audio midi setup on some macs.

Hi John,
Thanks for the reply.

It's good to know the 882 16 will do 24 bit if it's the one I think - rack mount 1U as you say.
-won't see it till next week.

I have just had a look and clock source is greyed out in the Audio Midi setup on my MP pro unibody late 2008. I don't know if that will change with a digital in/out plugged in but thanks for the heads up.

Cheers

BD
