That Was Too Easy!
Popped a 20GB IBM ATA in my G4, ran the partition utility (8x2.4GB), done in 15 minutes.

Re: That Was Too Easy!
...and when you discover that fast ATA drives work without errors on PT sessions; when you know that you can remove that SCSI card from your rig and install a top-shelf video card; and when you realize that this eliminates those dreaded -6402 errors; and when you realize how much money you've spent on noisy and hot 10k disks and start to become angry wth yourself because you never 'thought outside the box..'
...that, too, is too easy! |

Re: That Was Too Easy!
Well, I'm a PC guy, so I knew about IDE...but in a PC you'd have to set the BIOS, fdisk, format, and have about a 95% chance of cutting your hand on some sharp edge...
UNFORTUNATELY, I MUST use a SCSI card, but only for that ding-dang MLCD. I would LOVE to use FireWire, etc., but NOOOOOHHHHHH... I assume that MLCD's SCSI requirement is merely a lag in development maintenance, and that FireWire and USB will ultimately be supported. So I have one slot left for a video card (next year probably), but alas, now I can't fit a SampleCell card or a TDM system... |

Re: That Was Too Easy!
Just bought a Maxtor 40 Gig 7200 rpm
I divided it in 3, making an audio partition of 20G,the rest is for the mac system and applications. I run it along 2 cheetas and a 18 Gig barracuda... Runs all the demos without glitches, i can record in it, etc, etc oh, and the price: $295 at my local compusa My rig is mix plus in a 500 mhz G4

Re: That Was Too Easy!
The additional ATA drive bay bracket is supposed to bend, per the Apple manual. I have no idea why.
I just used the OS9 partition utility pre-installed on my G4, for multiple partitions you can only select HFS+. I don't see a problem with this, Digi says HFS+ is OK. |

Re: That Was Too Easy!
Tinn,
Seems like the Mac OS doesn't recognize my 2nd ATA. The G4 mentions to check manufacturer instructions that came with the drive for configuration. Great, their PC instructions. Now what? It can't be that difficult. I'll try to contact Seagate. haze |

Re: That Was Too Easy!
ok, it now recognizes the 2nd ata, but now
not the first. Apparently, the info. i received concerning the jumper settings was incorrect. My G4 came with a 10gb Western Digital ATA. I installed a 28GB ata for audio (partitioned it as well). The Jumper settings on the Western Digital remain untouched. I was told this jumper pattern should remain the same, and that i would have to change the setting for the second ata (because it was shipped as a master but, would now be the slave). So, i changed this setting. Yeah, it works. Now, i can't get access to my original drive. It shows up as a device, but not in the menu where i need to access the drive to initialize it. Oh, well. I guess i'll start over from scratch and see what happens. haze |

Re: That Was Too Easy!
Hey, my G4500 just came in the door.
Installed OS9.02. I have a Seagate i want to install as my 2nd drive. Funny, but the bracket is a bit wide on the right? What's up with that. Is it ok to mount 2nd ATA with only 2 screws (left side of bracket). Also, do i need to go down to the local Fry's electronics and buy HFS/HFS+. Or will the disk utility in OS9 suffice? I'll partition the 28gb ata barracuda into 3 or 4 gig segments unless you guys think otherwise. Thanks for the help. haze |
