Which P3, P4 please?
Hi guys,
I am goning to buy a PC only to run PT free and I have a few questions, a. People told me that the performance gain from P3 to P4 isn't worth the price difference, is that right? b. If so, then which P3? the following is something I am not 100% sure what they mean: Celeron (1.5V-GTL) Celeron 1.2ghz (256k cache, PC100, socket 370, FC-PGA .18micro) P3-Coppermine: (1.5V-GTL) P-III- 1.1G /256K FS L2 (FC-PGA, 100mhz) P3-Tualatin: P3-TualatinS 1.26ghz /512K FS L2 P4/S423: P4 1.7ghz CPU (FC-PGA) retail BOX with 2x 128M RDRAM + Intel D850GBC P4/S478: P4 2.2ghz CPU (MicroPGA) P-III-Xeon 550/2M (2M cache slot 2, 100mhz ) 4WAY (QTY limnited ) $2,360 P4-Xeon 1.7ghz (256K cache: FCBGA,400mhz ) 2WAY Your input is very appeciated. Thank you.

Re: Which P3, P4 please?
Copper Copper Copper
Do not buy a vegetable (Celery) Do not buy vaporware (Xeon) Do not waste money on more than one processor. (Look at the OS's that PTFREE supports, then look at what you're extra processors will be doing on those OS's) Get a PIII Coppermine with as much ram as you can afford. Stay away from VIA bios mobos (if you intend to upgrade to PTLE, it makes things harder, and even if you don't, the VIA chipsets don't work quite as well with other things either) |

Re: Which P3, P4 please?
You can get 40% better performance or better with the new Athlons at a price less than the P3 or P4. I've used them on PT free and PTLE with no problems.
Motherboards: A7V133 A7M266 A7V266 GA7DX (R) Processor: Athlon XP Performance: 24 Tracks + 10-18 Aux. Tracks with 5 plugins each. P3 and P4 best performance: 24 Tracks + 0 Aux. Tracks with 5 plugins each. Good luck. Allen |

Re: Which P3, P4 please?
I'm running a PIII 866 w/256mb RAM, and I get 24 tracks, but I couldn't really comment on the plugs, since I really don't use many at all. I bought it from www.dawbox.com . Seems to be a pretty good outfit.....

Re: Which P3, P4 please?
Hi you all good men,
I think I've got the answer but in fact I do not. The computer guy suggest me this setup: Processor: Cyrix C III Mather board: VIA, Apollo chip set Does it make sense to you. Is it a workable choice? The problem is the Cyrix setup only cost me $500 CAD while the Athlon XP set up will cost me $250 more which I do not have for the time being (I can save up to that in 3 months time.) I was also told that the Athlon XP will faster then the P4 if we use Windows XP. (info at tomshardware.com) But PT do not seem to support Windows XP yet. Does it make more sense to wait until I got enought to buy the Athlon? Or should I wait until PT supports XP? Thank you very much for you help! Re: Which P3, P4 please?
Get an Athlon motherboard:
A7V133 A7M266 A7V266 GA7DX Get the processor that you can afford right now and upgrade as you can afford. These motherboards will allow you to keep up with the new AMD XP processors as they roll out. You won't regret it. Check www.pricewatch.com for current Athlon prices. Remember, an AMD 1.2Ghz is going to perform about the same or better than a P4 at 1.5Ghz and will outperform most P3s at 1-1.2Ghz. Cost Comparisons: AMD 1.2Ghz 138.00 with motherboard P4 1.5Ghz 218.00 with motherboard AMD XP 1.8Ghz 247.00 with motherboard Just do it. Allen |

Re: Which P3, P4 please?
You should be able to get into a decent P3 or T-bird (800 to 1gig) you can afford. Prices are low and you have the option of moving up to 001 down the road.

Re: Which P3, P4 please?
Charter,
Do not buy a Cyrix processor running and older Via chipset for this application. You're only asking for problems. With best regards, Mark <BLOCKQUOTE><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial">quote:<HR>Originally posted by charter: Hi you all good men, I think I've got the answer but in fact I do not.
