Default is this a proper way to do sound?

im new to filmmaking and post production and i made a short film and now im doing sound for it.

i dont have any sound editing software at the moment, so i wanted to ask if this is a proper way to do post production.

Heres what im doing:

I use Final Cut Pro X (mac) and the short is all edited. The way im doing sound is simply recording sounds that i need with my recorder. i upload them to my mac and put them in FCPX and put the sounds where they are needed.

is there anything wrong with this? should i be using a sound editing software? It sounds pretty good and i dont think i need a software at the moment, but i was curious to hear somebodies thoughts.

Hi.

There's of course nothing wrong with that, as long as you get the results you want.

Pro tools is ment for big audio productions with lots of elements/instruments on separate tracks for mixing. Pro video people do use it, but then for mixing many audio elements to video.

If you would want to make more complex audio to your films, I think Protools is way overkill. I'm shure FCP can handle that fine.

If you only want to do simple things like cut out unneeded parts of the sound, or rising overall volume of the track, or just EQ'ing or compressing the soundtrack -- then I think you would do better with Apple's own SoundTrack software which I think is pretty nicely integrated working with FCP.

But if you want to do some serious audio editing, you need to bring the soundtrack to ProTools. What makes things more complicated is a) the spot timecode of any given recording, and b) number of tracks you have recorded.

Now there's nothing wrong with nubmer of tracks, you can have plenty. But my point is that if you have more than just the one soundtrack that goes from time code zero to the end of your video, then you need to know the EXACT timecode of each and every sound clip. And that may be a problem if you don't know what you're doing.

First take a moment to think about the biggest challenge in your situation and keep posting here for more help. Currently this is the best I can do.

The single most important thing in sound editing is taste -- the choice of what sound to put on the timeline (and when, and for how long). The tools matter a whole lot less. Good sound is about making good choices.

If the tools start getting in the way of you making the choices you want to make, then look at getting another tool. Until then, learn and have fun.

Soundtrack Pro was discontinued when FCPX was released, so it won't be an option for you.
