DIGI 01 vs TDM

I'm wondering what are the core differences between the digi01 & the TDM
version of protools apart from the huge price difference.
Is the sound Quality the same?
Are you able to run all the different plug ins?
Are all editing tools provided?
I understant there must be a difference but is it huge i'm keen to buy a system for musical purposes.

The simple answer is the 001 is host based (runs off of your computers CPU) and the TDM is a card based (runs off of add on PCI cards), thus freeing up your CPU for other things. Sound quality is roughly the same, but the CPU runs the plugs for the 001 (RTAS and AS) and the PCI cards run real time TDM plugs on the TDM machines. The 001 offers a maximum of 18 tracks at once (record) and 24 tracks of playback but the TDM systems are capable of doing whatever you can afford to expand them to. The 001 comes with Pro Tools LE while the TDM comes with Pro Tools software. Both offer just about everything you will need for midi sequencing and audio recording and mixing. Right now, SMPTE is not "officially" supported and you cannot do Dolby 5.1 on the LE version.

In short, for a project studio with the right computer you can do amazing things with the 001. If you have the cash and are serious about recording, step up to the TDM systems.
