OMF has open up mono tracks when they should all be stereo!!

Hi,

I've been send an OMF and when i open it all the tracks are Mono? i don't know what app the OMF was made in yet, but i've been assured the tracks should all be stereo.

OMF 1 to OMF 2 problem?
Anyone had this problem?

I may be wrong but OMF 1 is mono only
OMF 2 was the update for multi channel tracks

AAF carries even more info than OMF is that a posable to get?

Hmmm, I've opened about a million OMFs (from FCP or Avid) and I've never ONCE seen a stereo track, what application generated the OMF?

Agreed, anything I've pulled in from AVID is always mono. Simply create new, empty STEREO tracks and CUT/MOVE/PASTE the dual-mono files into the new STEREO tracks. I takes a little time but solves the problem.

OMF is always mono. The only thing you can do is to check the option "Pan odd tracks left, even right" in OMF session window.
This will never create a stereo track but will pan 100% L/R alll the tracks.
Being said OMF 2 is very old format and there are many other limitations which seem to be simple to implement.

1) There are no stereo-tracks in the avid. Routing is set via individual clip based paning.

2) There are no .L .R files in the avid.


3) Neither OMF nor AAF have ever supported stereo-tracks. OMF1 and 2 are the same in this regard (PT doesn´t read OMF1 anyway)

Hi,

sorry i didn't explain it well...

The problem is i only have mono (1 channel) of each part. so when the OMF was created its left off the 2nd track of the stereo part!

I don't know what app it was created on, the artist gave it to me thinking it would open up as it was when he recorded it.

I'll find out more laterz

for the record omf is not just mono. it's just that 99% of omfs come from avid/fcp editors and they are stuck with dual mono tracks.

i can successfully export omf 2.0s from nuendo with stereo tracks that reimport perfectly.

All I said referred to an AVID->ProTools-Workflow. BTW: It´s not 99% it´s 100% of all OMFs from AVID and FCP to PT are split mono because PT does not support interleaved audio (unlike nuendo).
Recognition of stereo-clips to PT wouldn´t make much sense because in the AVID a stereo element can sit on odd tracks (2&3 panned L/R) followed by a stereo element on 1&2. Many editors do not care about dedicated stereo-tracks when editing so PT would need to sort all stereo-clips to stereo tracks intelligently. Something that is very difficult to implement.
