Default Digi001/ProTools on PowerBook G3?

Is there any way to run the Digi001 on my PowerBook G3? I know that it doesn't have a PCI slot but is there any type of PCMCIA or PC Card that would be equivalent I would like the portability otherwise I will need to use my beige G3 desktop.

Thanks,

Paul

Hi Paul... Info on this topic seems to be in VERY short supply... I guess because not many people out there are "doin' it" yet... Here's what I've found out so far... PT PowerMix software will run on a PB G3, but I don't know if it has been tried on one of the new 1999 models (The skinny ones, and the one I want to use)... Some people report it working fine on the 1998 233MHz models... You need an external SCSI drive, of course... If you run PM that way, you are limited in sound quality by the Apple AD/DA converters... There is a product made by Digigram called the VX Pocket that is a PCMCIA card with analog and digital I/O that is SUPPOSED to work with PT PM, or any other Sound Manager compatable program, but people who have tried this report some problems... I have yet to find anyone with the combo I want (PB G3/333, PT PowerMix, VX Pocket) that have it running stable and trouble free... What you are asking to do would require a Magma chassis with an expansion slot: something I refuse to buy OR lug around... IMHO, the technology is so close I can taste it, but still not 100% ready for prime time... Take care... ;^) Pep

Check out http://www.magma.com/ it'll be the answer to you dreams...

Magma make PCI expansion chassis for ProTools, they are have one for the G3 PowerBook which can take two SCSI HD's as well as 3,5 or 7 PCI cards. Also has a I/O connections for the PowerBook as well.

It's yet to be certified...

Charles.

Hi
I have PT4.3 running on a 3400 Powerbook with the VXPocket PCMCIA card. For playback only you do not need an external SCSI drive. I am still not totally happy with the drivers (I am using the one which came with the VXPocket - I am going to try the one from Digigram's website). At the moment I get occasional clicks at the start of playback which I think are caused by the DAC being left at an arbitrary level when the last playback was stopped in midstream. I too would like to use the Digi 001 with my powerbook (the 001 arrived on Saturday - not installed it yet because of uncertainties about whether it will run on my 7300) but the Magma solution seems a bit pricy.
