Pity that there is no working asio win7 driver for 002 / 003.
Otherwise they would work with pt 11+.
Given that avid doesn't drop support for 3rd party interfaces..

There are lots of great interfaces out there at all price ranges including the new mboxes. I think they realize how tough the middle market is and decided not to compete. At least for now. Again all IMO.

It seems to me they ditched the 00X series and limited the new mbox capacity to force people towards an HD platform. In any case there really is a pretty large gap between the two with many people needing more ins/outs than an mbox pro is capable of. Third party appears the only avenue at this point.

They'd really miss out on sales if they don't have a product in the $1200-2000 price range, like a 004 rack.

If they just port over the great sounding Mbox converters into a new box with more channels, they'd have a real winner.

As far as I know, M-audio is an Avid brand, and because of that the Projectmix I/O fills that gap perfectly (if it wasn't for the preamps) 18 ins (8mics 8 lines 2 spdif, 8 in from adat). It's fully integrated in pro tools, logic, cubase and I forget which others. And is listed for 1200 on the M-audio website.

So while it would be nice to have an 004, the market segment that is sought out for that controller is already filled by the PMIO. Well except if you're looking for a rack mount, but as a controller with inputs, it is filled.

For the 003 rack, the 2626 seems like a logical replacement. It was always a better interface than the 003r. The only thing that made the 003r more desirable was the ability to run LE instead of M-powered so you could use the toolkits...

At a quick glance the projectmix i/o looks like a similar unit to what the 003 console was... I think Avid has probably realized they don't need two versions of a product that have essentially the same features.

Yes and no.

The Project Mix and 2626 aren't all that much newer than the 003 series.

Plus, some find the lack of LLM support a deal breaker. I wouldn't not recommend them, but with what else exists for similar pricing, it's hard not to look elsewhere.

For a company who used to be ALL about the hardware, they seem to be less interested in keeping non-HD users on board.

I haven't tried it myself, but in the projecmix firewire control panel, you can actually assign an input to an other output that the one Pro tools uses. This would enable you to do a direct monitoring function just like the saffire, without going through pro tools and the plugs. In a sense that's LLM.
